I've been elevator pitching it with "mad 19th century botanists" for so long that writing it a different way floored me. Mention duly added and when you get around to reading the book I hope you EAT it up. It did take me a minute to realise that it wasn't set in the present day, which meant that the comment about the wig-wearing totally threw me. I will love talking about all the cupboard frotting slightly less.

No idea what happened to Retta there. I wish, again, we could have had more of her and Prudence. But eh. I am *mad* for embossing though. I just don't think the cover remotely captures the tone, or subject of the book. It looks like a lady gardener's home companion for really boring lady gardeners.Kat Brownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14273545990845176567noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1273652815577465353.post-29334411527936359882014-01-15T15:01:25.407+00:002014-01-15T15:01:25.407+00:00Ha - I just read your line about the cover. This is the boo...I'm so pleased you enjoyed it. This is the book I'm buying everyone for their birthday (it helps that the cover is totally gorge). I agree with all of this. I loved the switch to Henry at the start of the book - I got so caught up in his story that I forgot about Alma entirely.

And your point about Retta - I loved her so much. I really enjoyed how she made Prudence and Alma reconsider their relationship. It's not often there's a character in a novel who's totally without prejudice and it wasn't just that there wasn't a happy ending for her, she was just fizzled out and I felt she deserved more. But even with that, it's one of the best books I've read in years.

I really want to run around pretending that I'm a comet.Sian Meadeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14536919654548369387noreply@blogger.com
