Christmas (Tea) Time: Teabag advent Calendar

I like Christmas, tea, advent calendars... and Christmas. So I like this clever little advent calendar more than anything right now. Different tea each day! Yay! There's even some rooibos chocolate tea hidden in there. Everything about this tea calendar is brilliant. It's £7.24 from Amazon for two boxes (you can buy one box here and if you're really really lucky it'll arrive tomorrow). So you can share, if you like. Or just open two boxes each day. Do that. It's more fun than sharing.

Make a pair of ruffle bow panties

We all know that burlesque attire is virtually regulation in lingerie these days, with your local generic underwear chain churning out scratchy nylon homages every week. But having recently witnessed the delights of Bordello we're in no hurry to forget that when made with effort and care, vintage smalls can turn you into an instant bombshell and can be surprisingly comfy to wear too: those showgirls didn't go in for g-strings, thank goodness...

So if you're feeling crafty and want to give your underwear drawer a festive revamp, clothes customiser Love Maegan has a fun and easy-to-follow tutorial here that shows you how to turn your trusty Bridget Jones pants into something a whole lot more racy - without losing their original comfort. The sewing is a doddle, and all you'll need is some extra lace and a few ribbons, depending on what you want your pinup panties to look like. This project is heaps of fun and addictive too - you'll soon want lace on everything!

Christmas Time: Graham & Green Tree Decoration

OK, I concede. It's officially Christmas Time in Domestic Sluttery HQ. I popped over to Brussels this weekend for mulled wine and Christmas markets, and now it's about time we start getting organised!

But I'm not ready to go full-on festive just yet. So these little bird decorations are a great way for me to ease into for festive spirit. They're from Graham & Green and so cute. There's something wintery and snowy about them, but without being in your face. The perfect elegant Christmas decoration. They're £18 for three.

Cocktail Hour: The Curious Russian

I’m not ashamed to admit a deep-seated love for fancy fruity cocktails, involving copious amounts of exotic ingredients like cherry liqueur, strawberry puree and juicy chunks of fruit. But as the weather starts to get wintery and dismal, I find myself erring away from the fruitier end of the cocktail spectrum. At this time of year there’s something very comforting and indulgent about delicious cocktails with lashings of chocolate, milk or cream. And since we loved the coffee cocktails Starbucks kindly supplied to us last week so much, we’ve since decided that cocktails based on coffee liqueurs are the way forward while it’s cold and grotty outside.

Our favourite is Kahlua, because it combines the tastes of rum, vanilla, caramel and coffee and we love its delicious sticky, syrupy texture. So we were drooling in anticipation when we heard that they’ve just brought out a new coffee cream in time for the festive season. Apparently it’s perfect in coffee or on its own with ice, but most of all we're smitten with having it in this sophisticated, boozier twist on the classic White Russian cocktail:

All you need is:
  • 1 shot Kahlua
  • 1 shot Kahlua Coffee Cream
  • 1 shot vanilla vodka (we like the one by Absolut)
And all you need to do is:

Combine all your ingredients in a cocktail shaker, shake and then strain over ice.

Settle in somewhere cosy with a pal or two, blankets and board games. Drink with a plate of mince pies within easy reach, and try not to squabble over the Monopoly scores once you’re too tipsy for property-tycoon masterminding.

Shop in the spotlight: Vintage Deli

Finding a fabulous vintage dress is a bit like buying the last chocolate brownie in a cafe, or getting a surprise hand-written love letter. It doesn't happen every week, but when it does, it's pretty wonderful. So I'm always hunting for new vintage shops. I found Vintage Deli last night and here's some stuff I'm coveting:

This dress suit is just £44.

The perfect little black dress for just £69.

If this red hat wasn't too small for me, I would be snapped up already. It's £26.

Got a favourite online vintage shop we haven't written about? Tell us in the comments!

Cool Cushion at Habitat

I'm so in love with this checked cushion. It's got an autumn-y feel to it, but somehow the check manage to stay bright enough to make me smile. I'm not a fan of drab interiors and this silk cushion will brighten up any room. Specifically, my living room which is where you'll no doubt find it after pad day. It's £25 from Habitat.

Sluttishly easy: chocolate praline Amaretto truffles

This is one of those "what if...?" recipes.

Recently I was standing in my kitchen, holding a bottle of Amaretto liqueur (let's not get into why) wondering how to top my Belle de Jour Christmas rum truffle recipe.

When all of a sudden a madness took me.

I started throwing everything into the mix: not just Amaretto, but PRALINE too! And not just praline, but dark chocolate AND white chocolate!

When I'd finished and the red mist had cleared, I worried that the end result would be some sort of unholy artery-clogging mess. Which it sort of is. Luckily, however, it is also NOM. And, hopefully obviously, may contain nuts.

You will need
  • 100g roasted peeled hazelnuts
  • 50g whole almonds
  • 165g caster sugar
  • 100g dark chocolate
  • 50g white chocolate
  • 2 tablespoons of Amaretto liqueur
  • 150ml double cream
  • 25g butter
  • 2 teaspoons of cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder
  • Silver leaf to decorate
Make it!
  1. Line a baking tray with baking paper.

  2. Chop up the white chocolate and melt it on the hob in a large pan.

  3. In another pan, heat the sugar with half a cup of water, stirring it over a medium heat for about 10 minutes until the sugar boils. You can catch any sugar crystals that have collected on the sides of the pan with a brush dipped in water.

  4. Throw the almonds and hazelnuts into a blender and whizz until they form a sticky paste, then stir them into the caramelised sugar until the pan boils again.

  5. Add the mixture to the melted white chocolate, stir until they've blended then pour onto the baking sheet and refrigerate until the white chocolate/praline mixture cools and hardens (about 20 minutes).

  6. At this time you might want to put your feet up, arm yourself a with a wooden spoon and deal with the remaining white chocolate/praline mixture in the pan. Just sayin'.

  7. Chop up the dark chocolate and melt it in a pan.

  8. Add the cream and butter. After a few minutes, stir in the Amaretto.

  9. Break up the chilled white chocolate/praline mixture and whizz it again in the blender until it appears roughly chopped.

  10. Stir the praline mixture into the melted chocolate, stir for a bit until the praline's a bit, er, integrated, then pour the whole shebang into a bowl and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

  11. You may want to take this opportunity to again clean the sides of the pan with your wooden spoon. Or you may prefer to do your taxes. Whatever floats your boat.

  12. Dust a wooden board with the flour, cinnamon and cocoa powder and empty the silver leaf in to a saucer.

  13. Take heaped teaspoons of the chilled truffle mixture and roll into small balls with your hands. Then roll the balls in the flour, cocoa and cinnamon, then in the silver leaf, and pop into petit-four cases.
And thank your lucky stars that I didn't throw in the kitchen sink as well.

Cocktail Hour: Colombia Coffee Fizz

The Domestic Sluts got invited to a swanky beauty event at Bourjois earlier this week. We spent the evening trying out make-up and drinking tasty cocktails (supplied by yummy Starbucks). I asked them nicely if they'd give us the recipe for our favourite - the Colombia Coffee Fizz. It looks like a latte, but tastes much yummier. There's enough of a coffee kick to keep you wide awake too, so you won't fall asleep on the bus and miss your stop.

You'll need:
  • One pack of Starbucks VIA Ready Brew Colombian Roast
  • 1 egg white
  • 30ml whipping cream
  • 45ml dark rum
  • 1 tblsp Green Chartreuse
  • 1 tblsp simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water warmed into a syrup)
  • Cream soda
  • Mint sprig
  • Ice
Make it!
  • Froth all the ingredients (except for the soda and milk), with a milk frother for about 30 seconds.
  • Shake this mixture in a cocktail shaker with ice and strain into a highball glass. Or a large latte glass if you have one.
  • Top up with soda and garnish with a sprig of mint and a sprinkling of coffee.
  • Spent the rest of the evening being drunk and jittery with caffeine. Aces.

London Underground Art at Pedlars

We've been feeling very London-ey this week. There's something about London at Christmas time that makes everyone happy. Alex has been finding cute little London buttons, and now I'm coveting these stunning signs from Pedlars.

These underground signs are complete one-offs so they're very rare indeed. They start at an ouch-inducing £199 though.

Or what about these underground carriage signs? These are £235, but they're a little piece of London history. Sure, that might be pricey, but who wants artwork that someone else has?

Sluttishly Savoury: Honey Roasted Parsnips

Honey roasted parsnips are one of my favourite things about Christmas dinner. Second only to roast potatoes. Parsnips are so tasty and somehow mine never taste as good as my mum's. But, they're a pretty close second. They'll come out sweet, sticky and gooey which compliments their flavour beautifully. You can use this recipe with carrots as well, or if you like both, mix the two up in the same pan. Make more than you need though, people will always want more of these.

You'll need:
  • 4 large parsnips (or 4 carrots)
  • Two tablespoons runny honey
  • One tablespoon olive oil
  • Black peppercorns, crushed
  • Salt
Make it!
  • Preheat the oven to 180 degrees.
  • Peel and chop the parsnips into chunks.
  • Mix the honey and olive oil together with the salt and pepper.
  • Pour over the parsnips and mix up until they're covered.
  • Pop them in the over for about 40 minutes, turning occasionally.

Christmas Time: The Advent Calendar

December just isn't right without an advent calendar. They're so much fun. But you're not going to fob me off with one from the supermarket! Oh no! (Well, not unless it has chocolate in anyway.) I need something a bit more special than that.

Like this wonderfully cute reusable calendar. Hang it on the back of the door and then move the little gingerbread man to a new pocket each day. Don't be boring though, make sure there's little treats in some of the pockets. It's £17.99 from The Contemporary Home. Order now and it should arrive just in time for December 1st.

Fiver and under: London Fabric Buttons at All Things Original

I don't know why you'd need dinky fabric buttons printed with London tourist sights like Big Ben or a double decker bus. But now that I've seen these London Fabric Buttons (£5 for the set) at All Things Original, I really want to stitch them on unlikely places, like my boring canvas shopper or a woolly hat.

Where would you put them?

Sluttishly Savoury: Super Simple White Fish Curry

As with most of the meals I find myself eating, this recipe is something that I made up with virtually empty cupboards and no time (read: just can't be bothered) to visit the supermarket. Also: It's the first fish curry I've made. I'm not sure if ground ginger goes with korma, or if you're 'allowed' to put garlic in curry. But it worked and so I'm stickin' with it.

You'll need these things (serves 2 greedy people):
  • 2 fillets of white fish, frozen or fresh
  • 200ml of coconut cream
  • 3 tablespoons of mild korma curry powder
  • 1 tablespoon of cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon of ground ginger
  • 2 medium potatoes, quartered and parboiled
  • Half a large onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • Sunflower oil, for frying
  • 100g of green beans (or any vegetable that you like, really)
Make it!
  • Fry the onion and garlic in a saucepan with the cumin seeds on a low heat - be very careful not to burn it!
  • Once everything starts to smell delicious add the coconut cream, curry powder and ground ginger to the pan and give it a stir. It'll look a bit soupy, but don't let that put you off.
  • Throw in the fish fillets, green beans and potatoes. Give it 'nutha stir.
  • Pop the lid on and simmer until University Challenge starts to get dull (around 20 minutes)
  • Dig in! Serve with rice if you like, but you probably won't need it with all those potatoes.

Shop in the spotlight: One Boutique

I'm a big fan of little shopping boutiques. In fact, I spend a rather huge amount nosing about little streets in London looking for new places to shop. But then someone told me about One Boutique and it feels like someone has done all the hard work for me! Hurrah! It's fancy, and full of pretty things. Pricier than high street shops, cheaper than Net-a-Porter. And twice as lovely.

This bow dress is such a great colour. The perfect 60s shape.

This is a such a unique coat. It'll brighten up drab rainy days.

I really like this little lovebird clutch bag. It's leather too!

Perfect Presents: Fancy Spoons by blaue blume

How fancy are these spoons from Lifestylebazaar? They're from blaue blume and so pretty. I love the heart shape, but it's the little initials perched on top that I like the most. They're made of pewter and yes there's £18 but there's one for tea, one for coffee and one for espresso. Perfect for caffeine addicts like me.

Wall Candy: London Print by Jim Datz

This London Print (£175) from Pedlars is one of the most original interpretations of a London map I've seen. I love how it's geographically correct (see how Old St pops out from Shoreditch!) and that the illustrations subtly capture the essence of each borough - I'm particularly fond of the book used to symbolise Charing Cross Road.

£175 is a tad costly but each print comes mounted, framed and signed by the artist Jim Datz. Did I mention they were limited edition too? See - they're practically an investment!

At least that's what I'll tell my bank manager.

RSVP the traditional way

I might love my little Macbook (enough to have a name for her) and I'm very much an internet lover obsessive. But when it comes to stationery, I'm very much a traditionalist. Hand-written letters, little notes to friends and postcards are all wonderful things in my book. And all a dying art.

Then I stumbled across Imperial Telegrams and my heart skipped a beat. Can't make your friend's wedding? Someone you know back home just had a baby? If there's a special event you wish you could attend, a text message shouldn't be your RSVP. Not if you want another invite ever again anyway. Instead, fill out a vintage telegram and for a tenner, Imperial will post it. Complete with vintage postmark. Some traditions are definitely worth keeping.

Design Porn: Rob Ryan Lomo Camera

More than one of us Domestic Sluts are big fans of Rob Ryan, it's true. From his tiles to tea towels and even his books, his is an utterly beguiling world.

Here's his latest collaboration with another design pioneer - Lomo cameras, available at Urban Outfitters for £45. Pretty as a picture, of course.

Wilton's Bug Cookie Cutters

Yes, I should probably be writing about Wilton's Christmas shaped cookie cutters, but these little bug shapes are so cute! I want caterpillar cookies! And butterfly ones! These are such a cute little idea and they'll look great once they're decorate. Think bright coloured icing and a bunch of friends with sweet tooth.

They look rather like the ones from Biscuiteers, but if you're feel like getting your bake on, these creepy crawly cookie cutters are just £10.99 from Amazon.

Cath Kidston - Bow Belle

Cath Kidston's range of crystal and enamel bow jewellery is supercute. Look at these bow hairclips - they're red, sparkly, and retro, what more could you want? Maybe I like them so much because they remind me of a brooch my grandmother, Dorothy, gave me when I was very young - or perhaps I'm just coming over all Wizard of Oz again, it's been known to happen. However these are so much more wearable than ruby slippers.

They're only £7.50 but typing in the code XMGG today only on their website will get you 15% off too. Fly, my pretties, fly...

Shop in the Spotlight: Ella Doran

Don't have any vintage crockery of your own just yet? Fake it! Ella Doran has the perfect solution for you with this melamine tray from her 'Vintage Plates' range.

I quite fancy her nest of cake tins too, quite the prettiest ones I've seen so far. Just imagine filling them with Christmas Cupcakes and giving them as gifts this year - you'd be so very popular!

Her Stacks and Stripes range should prove to be just as popular with the boys, picturing piled up vinyl or heaps of books.

I heart the custom printed wallpaper - perhaps I could splurge as a way to brighten up my tiny bathroom? I think a feature wall could be coming to a flat near me very, very soon.

Domestic Sluttery does Bordello boutique

So, last Thursday, on a dark and dismal November evening in London town, some of the Domestic Sluts scampered into the depths of Shoreditch for a decadent night of wine, chocolate and saucy, sequinned underpants at the opulent Bordello boutique.
Organised by Qype, and with wine donated by the magnificently generous Book Club, we had a wonderful time getting tipsy, chomping so much chocolate that we felt a bit sick, trying on vintage feathered hats and tittering over the erotica and the dizzying range of adult toys and accessories.

We met our rather charming competition winners, who won extra brownie points for having travelled all the way from Portsmouth and Brighton to peruse fancy knickers with us. And Domestic Slut Gail even had a corset-fitting with the intimidatingly talent Kunza, of Corsetorium, a rather dashing Vivienne Westwood-trained corsetier with neon pink hair and a black lace veil.

Gail told me about it later: "I was the first person to have a fitting with Kunza, who's created bespoke garments for films such as The Duchess and Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day. I tried on two, one made from Italian kid leather, and the second was Victorian silk. They were completely unlike any of the off the peg corsets that I've tried before and the different in quality was immediately apparent. They're things of beauty and unsurprisingly have corresponding price tags - about the £600 mark. Like most of the other items Bordello, add them to the lust list..."

Our competition winner, Becs, bought some of these Sailor Jerry-style Bebaroque pop socks. One of Bordello’s glamorous assistants was modelling some similar stockings, and we were all very smitten with them. And although at the time we teased Becs that pop socks just aren’t stylish on anyone other than kitsch little old ladies, now that I’ve seen them out of the packet, I retract that accusation, and would like to publicly assure Miss Becs that I’m sure she’ll look just as debonair in the ones she purchased. If you want to get in on the inevitable pop socks revival, you can bagsy the same ones for £18.

I became a bit obsessed with this pink glitter corset by Velda Lauder, which made me come all over all Moulin Rouge. But, I must admit that my ardour eased when I spotted the £300 price tag. I’m not sure anyone loves me enough to splash that amount of cash on letting me dress up like a glam-spangled circus girl. I might still put it on my Christmas list, though, just in case I manage to bag a rich secret admirer with theatrical tastes in the next few weeks. No harm in hoping, is there?

Cocktail Hour: Gin 'n' Tonic

I know at first glance, you might ask why I'm writing a recipe for the perfect gin 'n' tonic, but honestly, it's not as simple as throwing some gin in a glass with some Schweppes. There's an art to it. Just like a vodka and orange isn't a screwdriver. For a start, the perfect G&T had better have cucumber in it. Yep, throw out those limes and opt for cucumber instead. Trust me.

To make the perfect gin 'n' tonic you'll need:
  • 25ml Hendricks. There's really no need for a double. It's a simple drink, don't ruin it.
  • 100ml tonic. Honestly, the type tonic doesn't matter, as long as it's plain and ice cold.
  • Ice
  • Two slices of cucumber.

Make it!

Pop the ice cubes in a glass. Add the gin and top up with tonic. Stir well and then run a piece of cucumber around the rim and then pop two slices into your drink. That's it!

No more needs to be done, but it's the care and attention that goes into it that's important. Have you noticed how tonic in pubs is never cold? Or there's no lime? Those little things are important in a cocktail. Especially when it's as yummy as the G 'n' T.

Dream Dress: Black Tea Dress from Miss Selfridge

I first spotted this black tea dress over on The Fashion Police. Isn't it pretty? Well, actually it's a little more than pretty. But despite the cute collar and Audrey Hepburn-ness, it doesn't have that special something that I look for. You know, that thing that makes you do a double take when someone walks into a room? The thing that makes you excited when you slip it on for the first time. And if I'm buying a little black dress for a party, I definitely need that special something. But then I saw the back.

Suddenly, this simple tea dress has turned into something that little bit more special. I'm going to have to snap this up from Miss Selfridge very soon. Have to have it! It's nearly Christmas than there's lots and lots of parties to dress for. It's only £45. Bargain, no?

Bollocks to baking: Rhodes Bakery

I admit, Rhodes Bakery has been in Greenwich for a few months now. But honestly, it never looked that great walking by. And, if I've been to the market I've stocked up on all of my baked goods from the stalls there (usually on a Sunday around 4.30 when everything is half price). But my folks were down for the weekend so we popped in.

And I'm impressed. Mostly. I'd walk back there for more of their mini pecan tart. Actually I'd walk to the other side of London for one. They're amazing. Just the right sized for one person. Although I wish I'd bought another one. The little Siany-sized portion was £2.85, so it's not cheap but it's certainly more substantial than a cupcake. They're so yummy. Perfect pastry, just enough maple syrup and loaded with yummy pecans. It's small but perfectly formed. I even managed to sneak a brownie sample on my way out too. Yep, full points for those as well.

There's a little cafe bench and they do coffee as well. That said, I'm not sure how comfortable it would be to sit in with the takeaway punters and queue right behind you (and kids running up and down) so I think I'll stick to takeaway. Still, it's nice to have the option.

But there's little things that stop this from being a "must go to Greenwich" bakery. Again, I have issues with the boxes. Is it so hard for a bakery to find sturdy boxes? It wasn't such an issue with my tarts as they were solid, but after a windy walk along the river, my cupcakes would have been icing splodges. The lid wasn't even taped down so something dainty would have no chance of survival.

And then there was the issue that confused me most of all? Instead of buying two pecan tarts, I bought one pecan and one Bakewell. I've got a bit of a thing for traditional desserts at the moment. But as yummy as my Bakewell tart was, it had no jam in! None! Excuse me, Mr Paul Rhodes!? Where was my jam?! What I had was a very tasty almond tart. But a Bakewell it was not.

That said, Rhodes is definitely more of a hit than a miss and I will be back to try the brownies. And perhaps all the pecan pies. They're fantastic. If there are no pecan pies when you go, you can all blame me. I've eaten them all. Yummysome.

Want to check out Rhodes yourself? They've got a stall in Borough Market, or you can pop to their bakery in Greenwich which is on King William Walk right by the indoor market.

Finishing School returns for Christmas

If you've not yet enrolled in Finishing School - the North London craft and social event for accomplished ladies - you might want to put your name down now for their forthcoming Christmas event, which is bound to be a quick sellout.

Described by its founders as 'a bit like a grown-up Brownies' Finishing School is a regular free evening class where women of all ages can bruch up their skills, meet new friends and chat. Each class focuses on a different artistic or crafty activity while wine and conversation flows. I've not attended a class yet, but the Christmas one should be something pretty special: we've been promised 'drinking, music and high-intensity, maximum-glitter Christmas craft circuit training'!

Being a girl in London can be hard work at times, and from what I've heard about Finishing School, its recognition of that fact is where its true strength lies. It can sometimes feel like the internet is the only way to stay in touch or organise fun with friends, so a bit of a nudge in the right direction and the promise of crafty fun and a glass of wine can be just what's needed to get us away from the pressures our busy lives, our homes and our blokes!

Finishing School's Christmas event will take place on Friday 4th December at a brand new venue in Caledonian Road. Entry is free, but donations towards the cost of materials will be appreciated. More informatoin on the event can be found here

Shop in the spotlight: Made & Found

Oooh Made & Found is a little oasis of pretty. But just the right amount of pretty (I can't be having too much of the twee-ness). There's all sorts of lovely homemade and vintage things to peruse. They've got a shop in Yorkshire, but if like me you're too far away, here are some of the bits and bobs you can buy online:

These vintage polka dot saucepans are really pretty. I've been after some new enamel pans for a while, these are just right.

The is such a cute little sewing case. It might not be for the expert crafter, but if you're just starting out it's perfect.

This perpetual calendar is the perfect for a home office.

Movember Mugs!

If our 'taches on sticks weren't cool enough for you, I've found another way for you to get involved with Movember. You've got a few days to go yet, so these moustache mugs from Lifestylebazaar are perfect.

Want to look like Magnum PI? Yep, me too!

Or Charlie Chaplin?

Nope, I wanna be Hercule Poirot! The mugs are £13.95 for two. And much easier than trying to grow on yourself. It's like the laziest fancy dress party ever.

Lovely Leather at Karen Millen

Karen Millen are very hit and miss for me. I don't like much outside of their dresses, but their dresses are too pricey for me to buy. But I've fallen in love with this leather jacket. It's such a great cut and it's a stunning colour. It'll fit right in with all of my cute little vintage dresses and shoe boots. It's in the sale too! Hurrah! Unfortunately, 'in the sale' doesn't mean affordable for me. It's still £199.

Illustrated Guest Post! Christmas Cupcakes by Rachel Lewis

Seriously, how much do I adore Rachel from Rachel Says? Just look at her wonderful christmas cupcake recipe! Not only does this sound like a fabuous cake recipe that we have to try later this evening, but OMG it's in pictures!

Isn't it pretty? (Click on the main image at the top and it'll fill the screen so you can follow the recipe) If we could draw pretty dresses and cupcakes, I swear our entire blog would be in pictures.

Until we learn to draw, we'll get on with making the cakes, and you pop over to Rachel Says to look at the rest of her illustrations.

Shop in the spotlight: Nonesuch Things

It was actually the ever-wonderful Wee Birdy who alerted me to Nonesuch Things. But it's such a wonderful shop I couldn't keep it to myself. Just little bits of pretty, little bits of nothing. Little bits of wonderfulness that you really really want.

This Broderie Anglais cuff is £42. And so so elegant.

And the tape that was featured on Wee Birdy. I've got excited about funky tape recently too. There's a definite trend starting. These are £5.95 each.

These pretend petit fours are so cute. No I know I don't need them. But that doesn't stop me thinking I have to have them in my life right this very second. They're £11.50.

Nonesuch Things might be small, but it's pretty near perfect.
