Sluttery Interviews: Karen Hilton Designs

How cool are these designs by Karen Hilton? Simple, striking and very very cool. I had a chat with her about her work, which you can buy from our sponsors All Things Original.

Tell us more about your range and what you do.

I make homeware products, I just love interiors so it was just a natural thing for me to get into designing some of own. I think Britain has such a strong identity that I thought it would be wonderful to explore that in my designs. The obvious being the instantly recognisable Union Jack flag. That naturally led on to my Queen design, The 1st Class stamp & my most recent design the Crowning Glory cushion. No doubt I'll be adding more in the future, its a never ending theme.

What's a typical day like for you?

A typical day? ummm, well that would be my first cup of tea in front of my laptop. Then depending on orders I like to divide my day into stock making & working on new ideas. Although it doesn't always work out that way! If its a really nice day I like to pop out & do a bit in my veggie patch, I'd never move away from my work table otherwise! also it helps to clear my mind. I usually come up with some other idea whilst I'm pottering! Had a great idea the other day.... must remember to jot it down.

What inspires you?

You know, I hear that question time and time again. And I think, well for me everything! You can draw inspiration from almost anything. Could be a simple combination of colours or something in an exhibition, or magazine or something you see just walking down the street, Just open your eyes & take it in. I think if your the creative type & your lucky enough to turn it into work then your mind is just a constant whurr of ideas.

What's next for you and your designs?

At the moment I'm trying to put out more than just cushions in my range. I've just recently done some tea cosies and a order of Union Jack dog beds. I'm now thinking clocks would be great and rather randomly, pin cushions. And I'm working on a completely new range that hopefully I'll have out by Christmas.

Which other designers on All Things Original should we check out?

I really love Hide & Seek. Her illustrations are fantastic! My friend ordered some of her postcards & put them in a frame, They were adorable & just her packaging is worth the order!
I'm also a big fan of Zoe Est. Her brooches are wonderfully quirky.
