Bollocks to Baking: Peony Cake Company

It's been a while since we had cupcakes in Domestic Sluttery HQ. Now, I know you don't believe me, but sometimes (especially in summer) cake can be a bit too heavy. Really, I want ice cream. With biscuits sprinkled on top if I'm feeling treaty.

But, Peony Cake Company asked if they could send us some cakes, and I was curious. Having not heard of them until now, I wanted to give them a whirl. And we wanted to try something different so we asked Judy to send us the dairy free goodies.

These are some pretty looking cupcakes! Anything with butterflies on makes me happy, (so does seeing the look on the courier's face when people put 'Domestic Sluttery' on address labels). I don't actually like sugar paper (paper is for writing, not eating), so I've now got a little collection of sugar butterflies on my plate. Cute.

Luckily, once I've got past the whole 'eating pretty paper' thing, the cupcake is excellent. Strangely, there's two types of frosting - the pretty one you can see in the photo, and then another layer underneath. It's tasty, but a little overkill for me, but the sponge is good. Really good. Very lemony (it was a lemon cupcake, this is good). I like them. Can I tell they're not dairy free? Not in the slightest. Well, OK if I was being incredibly picky I'd say there was a slightly rubbery texture to the bottom of the sponge. Don't care. Could I eat more than one right this second? Yes, I reckon I could manage a couple.

I think there's slightly too much sugar in the frosting, but that might be a personal thing (my housemates certainly didn't mind). I'd really like there to be a hit of lemon in the icing instead. But I like these. They're gorgeous. I like that there's no extra charge for the dairy-free option. Judy is delivering to areas surrounding Surrey, Kent and London (subject to a delivery charge) and they're £20 for a dozen.
