Kate Spade Pop-Up shop

Take a look at the picture above. I'm seriously wishing that this was my house. It's gutting to realise it's not, let alone that this is a shop, and a temporary one at that. This is in fact one of the rooms in the Kate Spade pop-up shop, bringing some of their Transatlantic glamour to London this month. Though a massive American and worldwide brand, they've yet to make a big impact in the UK and, rather than do things the conventional way, they've taken over a town house near Covent Garden to display their range of bags, accessories and homewares.

The products are very artfully displayed - a bag on a chair, an umbrella propped up over there. The most prominent selling feature is the wall decorated with the product the company was initially built around - bags. My personal favourites, however, were some of the smaller items, such as the bracelets decorated with the song titles 'London Calling' or 'No Sleep till Brooklyn', though at £65 each they were beyond my budget. There were also some very nice bright yellow NY taxi mittens for £45, with the word taxi knitted in big bold black letters. Souvenir hunters could also pick up mugs for £20 or the Kate Spade London totes.

Beyond the products, there is plenty of inspiration to be found in the shop interior. The display successfully combines lovely vintage pieces with bright contemporary items. It uses lots of simple but stylish ideas that could easily and cheaply be applied to your own home, the stash of books in the empty fireplace, or the circular mirrors on the wall in the lounge, or the drawer filled with colourful blank cassettes that's shown in the photo above just for starters. There were also cute stools dotted throughout the house decorated with fun instructions, such as 'flirt with adventure', 'learn to cha-cha-cha' and 'eat cake for breakfast'. I wanted to eat cake for breakfast sat on one of those stools.

Central to the house is this gorgeous coloured striped staircase, topped off with a giant retro black and white photo on the landing wall. Fun, feminine with a twist on classic style, this surely sums up what the brand wants to be. Although I didn't purchase, I was inspired and impressed. Apparently Kate Spade are due to open a permanent space in the UK next year - full marks for their efforts then as my appetite for their products has truly been whetted.

The Pop-Up shop is open until 10 November at 7 Henrietta Street, WC2E 8PW. Full details of opening hours can be found on the Kate Spade website.
