Design Porn: Ellen Calvert motto samplers

I was enjoying a browse on the always cheering Kickcan and Conkers when my heart stopped for just a second. My bedroom secret had been found out.

Yes, it's true. I've taken of late to going to bed in a pair of woolly hiking socks. I know it's not glamorous but, in my defence, it is really, really cold at the moment. However, the main reason why my heart stopped because someone had taken such a mundane habit and made it look just so pretty.

The talented lady responsible is Ellen Calvert, a Margate based designer, and this is just one of the delights in her (brilliantly named) 'Honey I stole your jumper' collection. Her designs include knitted cushions and reupholstered school chairs, but it's the samplers - made by combining interesting typography and hand-embroidery onto vintage handkerchiefs - that stole my heart.

Forgetting to recycle? How naughty! And how gorgeous is this design? Prices aren't given for each individual piece but apparently start at £60. Contact her through her website to place an order.

Surely this is the perfect gift for your favourite marriage shunning couple? To make it even more perfect, Ellen is happy to rework each piece for individual colour scheme or to use your own old embroidery or fabric. Wonder if she'll work her magic on an over-used pair of hiking socks?

Beautiful, warm pieces that have a sense of humour - I'm definitely planning on keeping my eye out for Ellen's future work.
