We've shown you wallpaper with a
bird design before, but never with a back story as amazing as this.
Indie music genius Edwyn Collins - of Orange Juice and 'A Girl Like You' fame - had two cerebral haemorrages in 2005. When he regained consciousness, he could only say 'yes', 'no' and 'Grace Maxwell' (his wife). He also lost the ability to use his right hand. As part of his recovery, he drew this birds every day using his left hand, and now
Elli Popp has turned them into wallpaper patterns. There are
five different designs available, all at £21 a meter. Not cheap, but it makes for a beautiful and poignant talking point.
I really love this although it reminds me of a wedding we went to in a Scottish castle where hubby and I had a haunted bedroom with chinese bird-themed wallpaper!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness... what a sad - but beautiful story.... the wallpaper is stunning.
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing story. The wallpaper is very lovely too!
ReplyDeleteThe wallpaper's awesome on its own, but the story makes it even more special. Makes me wish I wasn't renting so I could cover a (small) wall with it.
ReplyDeleteOoh, and you can buy more things with this print from Edwyn Collins's online shop.
ReplyDeleteHas he fully recovered now, Sara?
ReplyDeleteSiany - Edwyn Collins has recovered from his stroke. I saw him perform at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral a few weeks ago! He was also on Radio 4 a few months ago with his wife, and their obvious adoration for each other made me cry.
ReplyDeleteI love love love love LOVE Edwyn Collins's music (Orange Juice hardly ever leave my stereo), and I've been meaning to purchase one of his bird prints for a while. Thanks for the reminder Sara!
And if people are looking for more reasons to love Edwyn Collins, this is one of the best songs EVER. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESy-Z8vqMrE
ReplyDeleteThat's an amazing story. I'd love to have wallpaper that I knew had helped someone recover their skills and health: how amazing that something so quietly 'everyday' was part of such a miraculous medical process!
ReplyDeleteIt's also worth reiterating that Elli Popp's wallpaper is fantastic too. Wins all 'round with this design.
