Sluttishly Sweet: Spice Baked Oranges

This dessert couldn't be easier, the only tricky part is peeling the orange. I have Nigel Slater to thank for the method, but I've beefed up the flavours to make it a bit more hot toddyish in nature.

It's perfect for any tired looking oranges you may have lurking around the kitchen as the baking process seems to perk them up and make them more juicy. It also gives you a kind of mini-facial as you open the parcels and the fragrant steam smacks you in the face.

Spice Baked Oranges (makes 1)

You'll need:
  • 1 orange
  • Pinch of ground cloves
  • Pinch of ground cinnamon
  • 1 star anise
  • 1tsp honey
  • Splash of whisky
Make it!
  • Preheat the oven to 200c / Gas 6.
  • First peel the orange with a knife, removing all the white pith from the outside.
  • Cut the orange into slices and put onto a sheet of kitchen foil.
  • Restack the orange with the star anise in the middle.
  • Dust it very lightly with the cloves and cinnamon, drizzle over the honey and whisky.
  • Wrap up in the foil, then bake for 15 minutes.
  • Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream (and don't eat the star anise!).

    1. There's a much easier way of preparing the orange : pierce the peel with a sharp knife and score down four times 'north to south'. Place in hot / just boiled water for 5 mins and then the peel is really easy to remove as is any pith.

And if you stand over the water you can get an orange facial sauna at the same time!
