Classic Twists: The White Shirt

I haven't worn a white shirt in years. Not since I had a 9-5 in an office. Apparently when I wasn't looking, they went all modern and the classic office staple got a little bit of an update.

I love everything about this white shirt. The colours are preppy, they're bold, they're fun. Yet the shirt is still crisp. The triple collar detail has got me reaching for my credit card. Want to beat me to it? It's £39 from Joy.

This bugs and butterflies shirt is perfect for spring. It's only £35. Is it just me or are ASOS getting more and more bargainous?

Sometimes we're a little critical of Oasis, but I've always been a fan of their smart stuff (this is largely because when I worked in the city it was the only shop within walking distance of my office). They get their tailoring right, and this pintuck shirt is no exception. It's only £30.

This looks like a plain white shirt at first glance, but now the lace inserts have caught my eye and I want it. It'll be a bitch to clean (delicate lace, high washing machine temperatures), but it's so pretty. It's £37 from Miss Selfridge.

This longline shirt is my wild card option (I know, get me being all daring with my white shirt choices). It's suitable to wear with skinny trousers, but really this is crying out to be worn as a shirt dress. It's the cheapest option too - just £28 from Dorothy Perkins.

  1. Unfortunately, they are made from man-made fibers, polyester mostly, or the cheapest, low - quality cotton, hence the low prices. Not real bargains, I'd say.

    1. You have to compromise somewhere, Anna Maria! Of course if would be great to afford 100% organic cotton all the time, but that's not totally realistic.

  2. I love that butterfly shirt. Your next task - to find a nicely-tailored white shirt that will contain large boobs for Asda prices..!

    1. I think the last one will - the casual style means that the first button is a little lower so you'll get cleavage rather than bulging. It's doing that sexy Out Of Africa 'not quite done up properly' thing.

  3. DAMN YOUR EYES SIAN! I want that butterfly shirt so much...but February is "do not buy clothes under any circumstances" month.

@Anna Maria I'm with you and Sian on how nice it would be to have 100% awesome fabric all the time, but I've had storming success with Monsoon's polyester blouses: they give that lovely wafty effect, look ace and I tend to wash them soon enough that any dodgy manmade side effects don't matter.

    1. Related: Your legs would look amazing in those high-waisted shorts. You'd have to buy those too.

  5. Matalan are doing a shirt dress in a really similar style to the ASOS shirt for £20. Sadly it's also polyester so won't suit everyone but I thought the print seemed familiar!

  6. Oh woe is me.... saw this and excitedly hopped over to my wardrobe, remembering a gorgeous Reiss pin-tuck white shirt I haven't worn for ages.
The reason I haven't worn it for ages...?...it nowhere near fits me! I'm a whole boob away from getting in it!
Och well, great excuse to buy the lovey butterfly number!
