Sluttery Fantasy: Máximo Riera Animal Armchairs

Don't get excited by the title: Domestic Sluttery hasn't gone all NSFW. Well. Yet, anyway. See how we go when I'm allowed to drink cocktails again (Lenten sigh.)

I think we're all agreed that armchairs are sodding great. What with work, sleep and my new-found PS3 addiction, I read a lot less than I used to. When I do, I like to curl up in my armchair, an ancient Parker Knoll that my grandma bought at auction 40 years ago, and which my mother recovered for me when I moved into my new flat. There's something about the arms, like you're being cradled (or, in my case, straitjacketed until you've finished a book for once.)

Spanish artist Máximo Riera has designed some of the most astonishing armchairs that I've seen in a long time. Lion, beetle and whale designs are forthcoming, and I'm sure those will be equally impressive. There are no prices listed anywhere on the site which is both sad and reassuring, as otherwise I would probably stare at my credit card wondering how to quadruple my credit limit.***

But for starters, how perfectly balanced is this rhino chair? I love the rich black seating and the detail in the head is just brilliant.

Octopi aren't my favourite things in the world, but the flow of the tentacles out of a very classic chair is rather beautiful. And having the head of the octopus as the seat? Genius. This, of course, is not an armchair, but how anyone could resist a chaise longue, let alone one designed like a walrus, is beyond me.

***PS - The good news! I've found the Octopus chair on Firebox. The bad news! You'll need...er...um...£35,000.

  1. I need an octopus chair so damn hard. I would plan dastardly plans in it.

    1. Babe, your hair's so long it would just meld into the tentacles like Daphne Guinness.

  2. If I had more money than sense, I know what I would spend it on. That octopus chair might be the greatest chair ever designed.
