The Domestic Sluttery Book Club
UPDATE - We've shifted the dates slightly because Rosamund Lupton is going to be getting involved in our chat about Sister. Amazing! She wants your questions and she'd love to hear your thoughts about the book. The Sister chat is going to be on 17th July so make sure you've got the good biscuits in then.
It's been a long time coming (probably because we had our noses buried deep in our books), but today we're finally launching Sluttery Book Club! Hurrah! It's pretty simple: we're going to read a new book every two weeks, have a bit of a chat about it and get down to the nitty-gritty of books we loved and hated. There will be spats and debate and hopefully some excellent new discoveries.
We're not being restrictive about what we read - one week it might be chick-lit or a Booker Prize winner, the next it might be a biography or a classic. You're not going to like every single book we pick, but that's OK too. Just skip to the next book or pick your own (and if it's brilliant, please tell us). You can suggest books to us here, or tell us via Facebook or Twitter using the hashtag #SlutteryBookClub
So what are we reading and discussing first?
Sister, Rosamund Lupton, July 17th. This is the book that made Siany stay up until 2am last week just to find out what happened next. She was late for a party on Saturday - she was sat on a bench in the underground because had to finish it. She's not going to stop banging on about it until you've all read it. We're also going to be chatting about this book on Twitter and Facebook at 8pm that evening.
The House at Riverton, Kate Morton, August 7th. When we asked you last week what books you were reading, three stood out as firm favourites - this was one of them so we've decided to find out what all the fuss is about. Join us for a lunchtime chat about the book, starting at 12:30.
We can't wait to share some of our favourite books with you, and discover some new ones. Oh, and if you're going to be doing all of this book reading, you'll need cake. Lots and lots of book cake. And probably this book mug.
Happy reading, everyone!

Coincidentally, I stayed up late one night last week reading Sister!
ReplyDeletePlease join in our chat, Liz!
DeleteI'd love to, but I have a work thing that evening. Maybe another time, another book.
DeleteYay for more book posts! ^_^
ReplyDeleteYay indeed!
DeleteDefinitely will be giving these books a go as I have exhausted my book collection and run out of inspiration! Look forward to reading them! x
ReplyDeleteIt's going to be so much fun! And if you don't like one of them, you get a bit of a soap box to tell everyone why not, that's always enjoyable.
DeleteHaha! they both sound good, so the soap box might have to stay stashed away for a while! x
DeleteGreat idea - but they are both dreadful books, I'm afraid. Please choose something less 'Richard and Judy' next time!
ReplyDeleteA few of us have read at least one of them, we don't think they're dreadful. Feel free to get involved in the discussions once they've started Anon. As we said, we're going to be reading all sorts of books - you won't like every single one that we pick, but isn't that the whole point of a book club?
DeleteI really enjoyed 'Sister' - can't wait to hear what everyone else thinks of it!
ReplyDeleteAnon, there's nothing wrong with being a bit Richard and Judy - their book club was cited as being responsible for big increases in the sales of books and library use which can only be a good thing, right? It'd be dull if we all liked the same thing!
I loved the House at Riverton and would highly recommend it. Sister has been sitting on my bookshelf for a while so going to dig it out now.
ReplyDeleteHope you love it. There's already a discussing starting among the Domestic Sluts!
DeleteI just think it's sad that so many book cluubs choose the same kind of books all the time. I expected slightly more offbeat choices from the Domestic Sluts. Will keep watching to see what you choose next though and hope that you enjoy these two much more than I did!
ReplyDeleteThere are lots of us - it'll be a whole heap of different stuff! Hopefully one that you really enjoy discovering with us.
DeleteLoved both Sister and Afterwards! Page-turners.
ReplyDeleteAlso all of Kate Morton. She's a deliciously fun writer.
Good choices here!!
Do join us for chats - even if you've read the books!
DeleteOh, and you should consider The Land of Decoration by Grace McCleen.
ReplyDeleteLovely book.
What time will the book club chat be on the 17th? As I have a dinner date with the other half! x
ReplyDelete8pm! Sorry we didn't reply earlier - your comments got caught by our pesky Spam filter - we've rescued them now.
DeleteThis sounds right up my street! Just ordered it 2nd hand from Amazon for £1.40 BARGAIN!! Sadly though I'm already half way through Revolutionary Road (which is amazing BTW) so prob won't have finished Sister by review night. I'm a massive book slut so it will be another book added to my vast 'to read' pile. Cheers!! :)
ReplyDeleteEveryone I know has a 'to read' pile or shelf. I love having one, it's like a little pile of stories that you're yet to get to, but might just rock your socks on a rainy train journey.
DeleteIs there a book choice for September yet?
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Hi Anon, the next book is Never Mind by Edward St Aubyn. We're discussing that one on August 28th. Instead of fortnightly, we're doing one every three weeks so there's a little bit more time between books.
