Design Porn: Laura Oakes

Apparently we didn't do enough exploring in Rye. If we had, we'd have discovered Laura Oakes' gorgeous gallery. Instead, I was tipped off by Gemlefab on Twitter and have been perusing Laura's website while also kicking myself that I didn't get to see her work in person.

Laura's pieces play on the whole shabby chic vibe, but I think she's gone a little further than that in her work. She's found her own style, her designs are different to stuff I've seen before and it's clear that she's inspired by the seaside and landscape around her.

Not in Rye? (Why not? Why haven't you booked to stay at The George yet?) Luckily you can buy some of Laura's work from her website. I don't know that I can recommend a cushion for £75 (they're lovely, but I just can't), but there are some great pieces at lower prices points as well.

Her alphabet mugs are £12.95 and you get to pick the letter you want. Please don't let me buy 26 mugs.

Or, you can go all out and get yourself one of her gorgeous pieces of furniture. So much work has gone into these. The furniture starts at £450, but very much depends on the value of the piece that's being used.

I really like Laura's work. The mix of art and photography is beautiful and the Sussex-inspired element appeals to me. It's a little on the pricey side, but you can see how much work goes into each piece and I love that every piece is a one-off. Rather than buy something off the wall, I'd be tempted to commission something really special from Laura.

Want to see more of Laura's work? Check out her gallery website or head over to Liberty - she's got their seal of approval as well.
