Fairground Attractions: All The Fun Of The Fair, For Your Home

Much as I love a matt taupe or a modest enamel cup sometimes - when it comes to my home - I want to make a bigger splash than that. Rather than looking towards a minimal Scandinavian log cabin for interior inspiration, today I'm feeling pulled towards the fairground and all the fun of the fair: flashy, a little bit trashy, but a lot of fun. Come ride with me?

This light up arrow can point us the way! For a fairground is nothing without some full-on lighting. Goodwin + Goodwin cater to this need marvellously. As well as arrows, they sell individual letters and even bone lamps.

At £225 each for the letters and the arrow, while they're no-one's idea of budget, they are cheaper than other similar designs. Also, it's definitely worth checking out their vintage section for some second-hand wonders.

Their fairground star lights fulfil my need for colour and kitsch perfectly: these are £74.95 each.

Something that won't make me throw up after too much candyfloss is Seletti's neon heart. It's available for £38.70 from Made In Design and will probably be mine once I've won big on the slotties (Seletti make individual letters too).

Moving away from the lighting (it's hard, I know), Pedlars's range of vintage goods includes some fairground attractions. I bet you could have had a brilliant time at Elmira's Nite & Day Fair. You can pretend you actually did with this vintage sign for £69.

A more practical way to get the look in your home - Rose & Grey's fairground arrow hanger is marvellous and will stick around long after the fair has left town. It's £59.

One of the most magical elements of any fairground is the carousel. Mini Moderns's Fayre's Fair wallpaper is an oldie but favourite, especially in this heather and gold colourway. It's £45 a roll. For an more fantastical kind of carousel, take a look at the imaginative world of Tres Tintas's Carousel of Dreams. Yep, a carousel of dreams.

More things to entice you to spend your money: how about one of those fortune telling machines? You can - literally - chose your own fortune with these vintage fortune cards from Pedlars, £14.95 for a set of twelve. I'm crossing my fingers that they'll tell me I'm going to come into a load of money I can spend on ridiculous fairground-style lights.

Or,  to truly experience the delights of the fair without having to leave your house, try out this mini fairground candy grabber, £24.95 from Prezzybox. It comes with the fake coins; you bring the sweets and no cuddly toys need to be harmed in the process. Everyone's a winner!

  2. This is what my new house is going to look like. Apart from the kitchen, which will look like a 1950s diner.

  3. You should definitely visit Carters Steam Fair - the colours and artwork are just fab!
We have some fairground signs on display in our house (my father in law used to work on the fair occassionally in the 50s) - they used to belong to a showland family from the South West. I did write a post all about Carter's artwork and our fairground signs if you fancy a look :-) http://duck-in-a-dress.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/colours-graphics-and-lettering-at.html x
