I'm not the only vegetarian contemplating veganism because they're increasingly uncomfortable about the dairy industry. Don't worry, I'm not going to get all PETA about it - everytime I've tried to give up regular milk, I've failed. Soya milk makes my tea taste of cardboard, while almond milk is lovely but costs a fortune. I always end up admitting defeat and guiltily buying a pint at the corner shop. But I'm not comfortable with the way cows are regularly forced to produce more milk than they naturally would, are slaughtered way before the end of their natural lifespans, and male calves are taken away when they're less than a day old.
Step forward Ahimsa Milk. They produce cruelty-free milk, which means no cows or bulls are killed or exploited to produce it. Cows have only five calves, are retired after their last calf and cared for for the rest of the lives, and male calves are reared to work on the farm rather than being killed off. Suitable for vegans? Well, if you don't think animals should be involved in our food, then no. But if you're looking for an alternative to your regular pint, Ahimsa are on the right track.
Ahimsa currently only deliver in the south east, but sign up to get news of national deliveries if you live further afield. Brace yourself though - a pint costs £2.25, but perhaps that'll come down as more people sign up. And if you live near Harrow, north London, you can order from Karma Free Pizza which uses Ahimsa milk to make its cheese.
Awesome, been waiting for something like this for a long time. We don't have that much milk, so it probably wouldn't break the bank and anyway I'd be willing to pay a bit more for a clear conscience. Thanks!

MMMMM, cruelty free milk and cheese. I can mostly go without the meat, but cheese, milk, yogurt are sooo hard to give up. Wonder where I can get it in the States (apart from Whole Paycheck.)
ReplyDeleteOooh. Good share!
ReplyDeleteI have been eating only Free Range animal products for a few years now, because I find the standards otherwise totally unacceptable. We've been having the Abel and Cole Organic milk for a while now, but I'd be tempted to give this a go, of only in support of a great idea!
