Flat Shoes That Will Get You Everywhere

The more encouraging weather makes it feels like it's finally time to step away from the black shoes I've been stomping around in all winter. If it's not quite sandal weather yet (though I've seen people giving it a try), it is time for something lighter on the feet. I love flat shoes: partly because I'm clumsy, partly because I always seem to be running for a bus but mostly because they are the comfiest type of shoe. A good flat wins the shoes war, hands (feet?) down.

Time to bust out the white now that the puddle hazard has diminished slightly. White, with a bit of black too, I mean, let's not go too crazy. These pointed toe flats are both smart and fun. They'd look fab with something like the pinky red trousers Kat featured yesterday. They're £55 from & Other Stories.

While for go-anywhere with anything style, Oasis have triumphed with these classic two part pointed flats, only £25. River Island have a similar pair for the same price but with the addition of a blinging gold strap because, well, they're River Island.

For days when I do want a slight heel, these Matter monochrome dolly shoes, £28 from Topshop are going to do the job perfectly. And with an ankle strap for support should I topple over at those dizzy heights. Also with something of a jazzy feel, I love the all-singing, all-dancing style of F-Troupe's bow shoes

The trusty brogue gets a spring makeover coming in a variety of pretty colours. One of the prettiest is the nude pink of the Millie Derby shoes, part of the NW3 at Hobbs collection. At £139, they're also the priciest pair I'm going to show you.

The powder blue of Dune's Duca suede lace-up is beautiful too. They're £69 (singing of Elvis shoe-related songs optional). I've been hankering after a shinier pair after Sian featured a bright pink pair in a a Friday wishlist from Labour of Love - I've got my shiny, greedy eyes on the bright red version.

Metallics can add spring optimism to an otherwise sturdy shoe - look at the gorgeous rose rose shimmer on Anthropologie's Moonshine brogues. They're £118.

Bare legs! This ASOS model is a brave woman indeed. The great post-winter unveiling has not yet taken place round my way but, thankfully, these Menace flats will look just as nice - if not nicer - with tights. A pair is £32.

The Menace shoe is available in loads of different colours. Like Topshop's Geek shoes (whose black pair have been on my feet all winter) or Office's Kookie, they're a shoe that look likes your old primary school shoes and comes in just about every colour possible. These Molly shoes offer more school style for grown-ups - only imagine the excitement if you'd been allowed them in patent pale blue when actually at school! ASOS have them for £22.

Really ready for bright colours? Nine West's Byteme11 pick a load in to not-a-lot of shoe: Pink! Blue! Yellow! Black and white! Adventurous souls can pick up a pair from Kurt Geiger for £85.

The Medocie flats, £88 from Anthropologie, are colourful but pay dutiful respect to the necessity of florals for spring. At least I think they're florals. If not, they're painterly splodges. Yes, painterly splodges for spring.

That's a trend also seen on these Scarlett Camos, part of the new collection from Miista, the company so beloved for its holographic shoes. Not quite as shiny, this slip-on pair still have a lovely shimmer and are £105.

And onto the gateway sandals - shoes you can wear now, perhaps even without socks or tights, without having to reveal your toes to the world. The low heel and toe coverage offered by the Swedish Hasbeens Haga make these firm winners for me. You can pick up a pair in Urban Outfitters for £89 or, for a cheaper alternative, think Spanish not Swedish with Kling's Mars sandal

Finally, nothing can herald the arrival of a new season like wearing a pair of birds on your feet. Shelly's Bird Print Slip on Shoes. Yes, you can toucan. Grab a pair from ASOS for £45.

    1. Yes! I've succeeded in finding a pair of shoes we can agree on. But, to be contrary, I'd put them with your stripy skirt. Matching is the new clashing is the new matching or summat...
