Sluttishly Savoury: Dirty anchovy pasta

I love anchovies. Not everyone does, it's true. Some people HATE anchovies. Well, some people are fools and will miss out on this lovely umami-tastic recipe. It's my dirty little secret dish, the thing I make for myself when no-one's looking. If, like me, you're a closet anchovy lover then you must try this recipe.

I use wholewheat pasta as I think it stands up to the strong flavours in the sauce. Add as much chilli as you dare, or be very lazy like me and buy anchovies in chilli oil.

And cover it in plenty of Parmesan. I won't tell anyone.

Dirty anchovy pasta (serves 2 or one greedy loner)

You'll need:
  • 150g wholewheat pasta
  • 1 tin anchovies
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • A sprinkle of crushed chilles
  • 200g broccoli, chopped into florets
  • 50g Parmesan cheese, grated
Make it!
  • Bring a saucepan of salted water up to the boil. Cook the pasta for the recommended time.
  • Meanwhile, put the anchovies and their oil into a frying pan over a medium heat. When they start to sizzle, add the garlic and chilli. Keep stirring over a gentle heat so that the anchovies break down and make a sauce.
  • 4 minutes before the end of the pasta cooking time, add the broccoli florets to the water.
  • When ready, drain the pasta and broccoli and toss in the anchovy sauce.
  • Top with the grated parmesan

  1. Love anchovies! I'm the only one in my house who does though so I'd have to eat this all by myself. What a shame!

  2. It's just that they're hairy... hairy fish is strange.

  3. Oh my goodness, your dirty little secret dish is sophisticated!!

My dirty-secret-quick-comfort food is either pasta with grated cheese and ketchup (I'm embarrassed even writing it down), or rice with onions, tuna, sweetcorn and cheese! Both of which are so secret that I won't even eat them in front of my husband... He's aware they exist, but has never seen them.

    p.s. anchovies = wrong
