Updated March 2014 Shoe shopping for me and my size 9 feet used to be complete hell. As a teenager, I was lucky enough to be heavily into the skater scene and so spent all my time in trainers. But no more! I love boots, heels and saucy brogues and the only time I wear trainers is when I'm going for a jog.
Things have improved a lot for girls with larger-sized feet over the years, and not everything looks as though it's been designed by a builder armed with a set square. While I do like to write about shoes for larger feet on Domestic Sluttery, a request from a reader over on our Facebook page made me think it would be a good idea to have a post that covered the places to buy them.
Size 9s have more options than other girls which is just unfair, but I hope there will be something for everyone. At 6'1, the idea of being 'large' is one of my most hated terms; for years I slumped and hunched around trying to make myself a bit more dainty. Bollocks to that. You can still have size 9+ feet and wear dainty shoes that look brilliant, whether you want heels, brogues, flats, pumps, or boots.This guide runs the gamut from cheap, cheerful and flimsy (although having nearly broken my toe recently in some cheap ones, I would say fork out for decent ones) to investment shoes. Onwards!

February 2013: Sadly Amber and Jade and Tall Girls have stopped making size 13s which means the cupboard is bare. I will keep my eyes peeled for decent shoes, don't worry.

The shoes
Shoes of Prey (up to 13 and a half)
Price: £109-£169
An absolute godsend for women with large, differently sized, or simply awkward feet. Shoes of Prey lets you design your own shoes, from the choice of heel and toe, to fabric and finish. You get charged a set amount per shoe type: £109 for sandals, ballet shoes or flat oxfords for example, or £169 for ankle boots or heeled oxfords, and the rest is up to you. Tell them your shoe width, whether one foot is larger than the other, and Shoes of Prey will make it happen. AMAZING patterns and fabrics too - wow.
Shoesissima (up to 12)
Price: £60-£99.99
I'm quite wary of online-only ready to wear stores, just because returning things can be such a faff. One way that Shoesissima looks to address this is by providing precise sizing for each model - get the width right, and you're on your way to comfy shoes. Their real sweet spot is flat sandals: they have oodles in bright and exciting colours.
Tall Girls (up to 12)Price: £29-£99
A staple of mine from my teenage years (their showroom is near Alton in Hampshire, where I went to sixth form) Tall Girls also does the odd pop-up in London. Happily, their shoe selection is vastly more stylish and extensive than when I was 17; there's plenty of pretty shoes for size 12 girls here
Magnus (up to 12)
Price: £25.95-£119.95
I'd previously ignored Magnus after a particularly depressing trip to their Baker Street store with my mum when I was 15, but a quick look on their site now shows some decent shoes that run from a 9 to a 12. Sift through the boring (and pricey) stuff and there's some gold. Well done Magnus.
Long Tall Sally (up to 11)
Price: £28-£130
LTS used to veer solely between the hideously sensible, or unrealistically skyscraper, but they've been sneaking in some really pretty styles recently. I have a huge penchant for small wedged shoes (comfier than those ghastly ballerina pumps) and there are some lovely sparkly and patent versions this season. They also stock other brands like French Sole, Hush Puppies, Converse and Sam Edelman.
Hush Puppies (up to 11)Price: £45-£90
I know! Or rather, I thought I did - I had HP down as tedious, earnest shoes until I had lunch with my friend Elizabeth the other week. She was sporting the most beautiful, fun pair of size 10s - the Freya, which comes in so many colours that I'm tempted to start collecting them. Hush Puppies go up to a size 10 and offer different widths in some styles. Definitely worth a rummage as there are some really beautiful shoes on offer.
The Shoe Tailor (up to 11)
Price: £20-£70
I only found these guys while researching another post idea on shoes for girls with wide feet. Hallelujah! Nice shoes from various brands at around the £25-35 mark that go up to a 9 and come in three widths. Super. They also offer a few designs of mule, and some Hush Puppies, in a 10 and 11.
Upper Street (up to 10)
Price: £195-£265 and any embellishment costs
Now, like you lovely readers I've spent hours playing "design my dream shoes" on Upper Street's website, but had dismissed the fun as a pipedream as a) they're spendy b) I didn't think they'd do my size c) I am horrifically indecisive and could never settle on a design. But no. If you've got money to spend on your perfect, personalised pair of shoes then you can get anything from ballet pumps to heels in sizes 1.5 to 10. Well jel.
Redfoot (up to 10)
Price: £29.99-£44.99
If you're ever wanted a pair of those handy folding flats for your handbag, Redfoot's large is a size 9-10 (mine fit more like an 11!). Lots of really lovely styles and well worth a look. Great fun.
DUO (up to 9/10)
Price: £65-£280
I bang on about DUO so much I should probably get a commission. They have shops in Bath, Edinburgh and Covent Garden as well as a good online shop and their niche is selling shoes up to a size 9 - size 10 in boots - in three widths. Great boots , beautiful flats and heels and never fail to make me feel normal rather than 'large' - they also have a handy online outlet store.
Evans (up to 10)
Price: £19.50-£45
Evans used to do a couple of shoes in a size 11 but has sadly stopped doing this - well, not that sadly. They weren't terribly sexy. Evans kills two birds with one stone: large sizes and wide ones too. The flats offer significantly more support than many other high street shops which is a blessed change.
Irregular Choice (up to 9) Price: £59.99-£124.99
I salivated over the bonkers offerings from this shop for years but could never afford them. I still can't really afford them, so treat them, like DUO, very much as investment shoes. Their Carnaby Street store has always had a size 9 in whatever I've asked for and some of my happiest shoes have come from here. Their online shoe outlet is also a hive for bargainous 9s.
Clarks (up to 9)
Price: £34.99-£79.99
Yes, yes, they do the madly sensible options, but there's also some really pretty stuff on offer. (update 2014: their brogues are AMAZING. Some of my favourite shoes are now Clarks.) And, because they are a sensible shoemaker, they're not going to completely screw your feet over. Available in a variety of widths too, and there's even a couple of their Liberty range on offer. Although not all, obviously. Size 9+ girls clearly aren't deserving of the entire range *seethe, mutter, boil*
Russell and Bromley (up to 9)
Price: £95.50-£250
Russell and Brom have finally done up their website to actually feature the shoes they sell - progress! - and they do an enormous selection of size 9s. I still have lovely memories of the Chanel-like black patent quilted pumps I bought from them a few years ago for an eyewatering £70. Prices have got even more staggering in subsequent years, but if you're in the market for them, you feel very good indeed having R&B inscribed on your soles.
Nine West (up to 9)
Price: £45 - £110
A reader left a comment saying that she bought all her glam shoes from Nine West in the US. I did a little check and lo! Nine West in the UK do size 9s in a great variety of styles. They're pricey, but worth a look if you're going to buy from the States anyway.
Aldo (up to 9)
Price: £30-£90
I've bought a pair of pretty, mid-size stiletto heels from Aldo in the past but I just don't find them tremendously comfortable. Still - you don't know unless you try and at least they're out there - albeit divided mostly between flat sandals and skyscraper platforms at present.
The High Street (up to 9)
Price: £7-£99+
I'm putting this lot together in one because the quality differs wildly, and so few of them are available in store. This makes me so cross! How am I supposed to see whether something can fit unless I can try it on?
That said, I'm a big fan of Office, less the stores which tend to be uniformly horrible shopping experiences, but for its online sales which have served me extremely well over the years.
Debenhams stocks quite a few size 9s (its own Debut collection; the rather flimsy-looking Red Herring and - God love 'em - odds and sods from the now defunct Faith) but I've got my eye on Henry Holland's H! range which I found via the absolutely splendid All The Tall Things blog. Cheap and cheerful and some really splendid-looking flats.
Topshop and New Look. I'd stay well away from most of their flats unless you want to do your feet some serious damage on the pavement (heels made of paper! Paper!) but New Look's wedges and heels are particularly strong. I spent most of July 2010 giddily strutting around in the most unnecessary, but fabulous, pair of coral wedges. (Confusingly, while Next and Dotty P use 43 to indicate a size 9, Topshop uses a 42.)
Next also purport to do size 9s, but I've NEVER SEEN THEM in store. Not even on Oxford Street. I really, actively dislike going into shops and asking for my size only for the shopkeepers to look confused and generally react as though I've asked for a giant crocodile for each one of my feet. Luckily, their website has lots of 9s on there and some really nice options.
Dorothy Perkins also have some lovely shoes on offer online, but very rarely in store. I went in the New Oxford Street/Tottenham Court Road branch recently and spotted two pairs. Le sigh. Still, there's plenty to feast your eyes on their website, and at good prices.
Designer shoes (up to 9) Price: A millionty pounds
A bit of wishful thinking, this, but size 9s again get spoiled. If you do happen to have £400+ to spend on a pair of shoes, you could go for Givenchy, Louboutin, Jimmy Choo, Chloé, Miu Miu, Yves St Laurent - I'm going to stop now because this is basically making me cry. Have a perve over on Net-a-Porter for a lovely selection or The Outnet for a smaller (but cheaper!) set of options.I hope that's restored your faith in shopping for shoes - if I've missed out your favourite, let me know!

ReplyDeleteWhen I was 6 years old, I remember trying on a pair of my Mum's pumps one day... my feet WOULN'T fit into the shoes, as they were wider than the USA Ladies size 6.5 (UK Ladies 4.5) shoe... by the time I was 16 (1988), they grew to a USA Ladies size 13 (UK Ladies 11)

DeleteShelbycat, mail order is your friend! (Who am I kidding. It's a total nuisance, but at least it provides access to shoes). Some of the stores I've listed do free postage which is rather obedient of them.
Check out PrettyBigFeet. They do size 8 - 13s stylish stuff flat and high heels. My 17 year old size 12 daughter loves them.

To add to the confusion Kurt Geiger shoes in size 41 do fit a size 8 foot. Seems they've sized up on the sly to flatter their customers, bit like how in m&s their clothes are a size bigger than whats on the label! Does my head in why can't shoe companies all just agree on one size!!!!

Fab post - as a 6'1" size 8 shoe gal sometimes it's hard enough to get nice shoes that aren't stratospherically high too, so this is really helpful. Shops that say 41 is an 8 are clearly clueless! (that said, Next's 41s are nearly always the right size for me...)

ReplyDeleteI always pop into John Fluevog when I'm in New York (or do the mail order when I just *have* to have a pair which are in the sale). Expensive but worth it. I am a size 41, so not quite large large, but Fluevogs are comfortable and stylish and male my feet look quite dainty-ish. Not clodhoppers anyway. And one sales assistant said sweetly to me, after I'd been lusting after the men's shoes as well: "with your show size, you have access to any of the shoes in this shop." Which was an utterly sweet and very American way of saying my feet were so large I could wear the men's pointy-toed brogues.

DeleteI'm a size 9.5 and I struggle completely on shoes. I order a lot from American Eagle in the States, I love their boots but all 3 pairs of boots have recently had to be binned due to 2/3 years of wear out of them. Also not cheap for a 24 year old to order! :(

Oh crikey - I can't believe you've had to buy everything from the States! I completely sympathise on the price problem; I lived in very paper-thin flats when I was 22, although I developed a dependency on character dance shoes, which I bought off eBay.

Thanks for this - as a fellow Size 9 I feel your pain. I find that an American 11 from Nine West fits as a normal UK 9. I get my good shoes from there and my cheaper fashion shoes from Next Directory (ordering online).

If you're on a budget, try BigShoeBoutique [a spin off shop of Barratts] but I don't use them any more because the quality reflects the price :/
Also, google Joerg's site for Tall Women - a veritable resource for tall clothing and shoes.
And now I shall get off my (very tall) shoe box and go and have some biscuits.

ReplyDeleteIt's got so much better over the last few years. I've found 9's also in the Nine West concession in House of Fraser, River Island (!), Primark do size 9's in their wide fit range (although I haven't seen any for a while), Shoe Zone & Brantano do 9's and are good because all the shoes are out and you don't have to ask for sizes. I've found a few pairs of Accessorize/Monsoon & Tesco shoes in an 8 which have come up quite large.

I'm trying to find suitable shoes for my wedding, but finding nice shoes in a size nine is near impossible at the best of times, and I don't want to be tramping down the aisle in high street tat. Also, I'm a teeny bit taller than my fiance, so nice flat shoes in a size 9.

For well-made basic styles, try Padders and Hotter shoes. Both have websites and online sales. Prices for shoes start around £50 (ballpark figure) but they are properly constructed and will last.
DeleteKatie, if there's nothing quite right for you then I'd suggest Upper Street or Selve - that was you can design your own shoe. As far as I know they both go up to a size 9.

DeleteI am a size 10 and have groaned for years when it's time to replace the shoes, boots or sandals. Magnus designs don't seem to get too exciting, and i dread the trip to Baker Street, even though I live in London as i usually come home empty handed. so I tend to turn to Katie Long Shoes as her stock is really good. Katie is also very helpful. the postage is an absolute pain. I went to Paris over Christmas and was delighted to find a Gabor shop. lovely choice of size 9 and 10 boots. made me cross that we don't have this in the UK. After 8 shoes is ok. I complained about their poor stock and choice in my size. They agreed and have plans to improve this. I'll wait and see. You haven't mentioned Crispin Shoes - quite expensive but a good place to visit.

DeleteI've never heard of Crispin Shoes! Will check them out now and update the guide. Ditto Gabor - although I googled them and they had quite a few stockists in the UK? Their website's a bit of a bore though isn't it. What's the point of not letting you search by size, shoe manufacturers!

I do struggle with the difference between 42 and 43. I also feel that I was always an 8 and either my feet grew a size in my 40's or shoe sizes changed. Thanks for making me feel normal x

I live in Paris, and my favourite store for large sizes is Sacapuce which is up by Montmartre ... they go to size 48 in selected styles.
I stumbled across a Gabor store on the rue Saint Lazare today, but they only had size 9/43 as the largest, and the woman said that Gabor don't come in size 44 ... but ... on Javari.com, they have Gabor shoes in size 44.

DeleteA 44 is indeed a 10, but if in doubt try them on. Have you tried giving Gabor's main headquarters a ring just to clarify completely? The lady in the shop may have got it wrong, or Javari.com may size differently. If the postage isn't too heinous, it might be worth giving them a go if you're very keen.
The Gabor size 9/43 in the store were a bit snug, so I am tempted to buy online from Javari.fr ... but am wondering if what they size as 44 may really be a size 9.

DeleteParis has a couple of other big-shoe options - Sagone and Palais de la Chaussure are both good and have shops almost opposite each other just next to Parmentier metro. Sacapuce is also great and the lady who runs it is very friendly and helpful.

This is great! I have found a few pairs of Joe Browns good via Viva La Diva...but a lot of dross on there too! I wonder if anyone has tried the designer shoes? How do they come up- a true 9? A 9 but mega skinny in width (like Topshop in my view).

ReplyDeleteHave you tried Medissa? www.medissashoes.com They do larger sizes but also for narrow feet which has been my biggest problem - I've got long feet - not big feet!
Medissa shoes are a lifesaver. They are a bit low on fashionable or even OK looking shoes, especially in wider fittings, but they are the only place I can buy extra wide size 10.5 shoes.
DeleteThey are expensive because they have to import shoes from outside the EU and the shoes are subject to a high duty to discourage cheap imports from China (!) - lobby your MP!
They travel round the country doing shoe sales at weekends so you don't have to rely on mail order.

ReplyDeleteI bought a pair of size 44 online from javari.fr and they are only a 9.5 (written isnside the shoe).
A bit too short, but the width was good.
Great thing about Javari is that the postage is free both for delivery and returns (you print a returns voucher and attach it to the box and don't pay at the post office ... woo hoo !)
I'm going to stick with Remonte Dorndorf in size 45, as they fit really well, and I guess must be a true UK 10.

i have size 10 is so hard to find shoes. the other major problem is the price! £70 for a shoe that is half the price for a regular size shoe!

ReplyDeleteI am Spanish and I was struggling every time I had to buy nice shoes. Lucky me I live in UK now and is not that horrible. Here is a Spanish shop that makes shoes up to EUR 46. They are nice the only problem is the postage to europe (25€...).
As a girl with size 10s, I've also struggled to find attractive shoes that do not make me look like a tranny -I've recently found Castaluna on-line. On Chiltern St. (near Baker St tube) both Crispins shoes & Totally Shoes do large sizes and both retail on-line too.

DeleteKat, our resident tall girl is actually away at the moment. My recommendation would be to have a hunt through the shops listed - they're all listed by size. There are some personal recommendations in the comments as well! Hopefully you'll find something really lovely.

Tall Girls have nice shoes which in some cases go up to size 12 and there are some nice strappy 'school' shoes...I would definitely advise you to have a look...Also I get my shoes from France and find Sagone really great - All sorts of nice shoes in size 44...Also Andypola [Andres Machado] do large sizes from Spain - Nice cheap shoes not massively good quality but useful site...and you can also get them on Amazon.co.uk...There's a nice strappy one at the moment....Good luck...I remember the days when a Size 8 was impossible to get but now that my feet have expanded over the years [!!!] it is even harder to get a 9 or 10...but they are out there particularly if you shop online. Cinderella have nice ones and so do Medissa shoes....all online.....
DeleteIm a size 10 and also thought a was the only size 10 girl in the planet lol there is also a shop called deichmann which do up to size 10, some pretty styles too. But you have to be quick in-store because they sell out pretty quickly. You can buy online too. Happy shoe shopping ladies :-)

I managed to find some naff-looking, plasticky shoes in a transvestite shop in Brighton, but they're not exactly professional-looking nor comfortable! Anyway, I'm a student and definitely can't afford the prices the single up-to-size-13 website recommended on here charges. Shame. All of you women in the comments section saying, "I'm so happy; I've always felt like the only size 9 in the world," believe me: you've got it easy!
ReplyDeleteYou have my complete sympathies Hayley. The simple answer is that the other shops offering size 13s have just stopped doing so. I'm constantly looking for new ones and I update the list when things change. We will find some! Good luck, and please let me know if some turn up.

I would say a size 13 would be size 46 or maybe 47.
The prices are not so bad, so I guess you just have to save up for one purchase a year, during the June-July sales.

Hi all you ladies, I had a size 10 1/2 shoe in 1969 at the age of 14, I spent years depressed and often ridiculed. Things today are great I have dozens of pairs of foot-wear but I will never allow anyone to say I have 'big-feet' Our feet are a wonderful functional part of our bodies celebrate them, wear toe rings, nail polish and stand tall. Although I'm obviously trying to make a living from selling shoes, I feel really strongly that a change has to happen soon, a conviction which is strengthened every time I read this thread.
It is so nice to hear from all these other women who feel the same way - surely it can't be long until more high street stores get the message and start stocking larger sizes on a more regular basis?!

Another idea would be to buy plain white silk ballerinas, and then add your own decorations - it is easy to glue beads or flowers or even attach a glitzy brooch to the toes.
Thank you for this post! I have been struggling to find interesting large shoes (being a size 8.5 is so annoying). We should start a campaign to make 8 = 42. I've noticed that in mens shoes that 8 does equal 42, just not in ladies. Sooo annoying!

My search for slippers on the high street during last year's freezing cold winter actually reduced me to tears. I'll be checking out a lot of these. My difficulty is that I'm a slim size 9, and for some reason they tend to make size 9s to fit bigger calves. Short of either abandoning my love for calf-height boots or spending ridiculous amounts on getting them custom-made, I'm stuck...
ReplyDeleteTry Special Feetures for narrow fittings and longer sizes. Most of their shoes come from USA so start from about £70 to £160 for boots. But their staff are very good, and wear the shoes themselves so can advise.

DeleteI just discovered your blog recently and I can totally relate at 6ft1 size 9s too :) I definitely recommend Evans, The Shoe Tailor, Viva la Diva and After 8 (online and in Kingston, nr London) - all do fab shoes in a variety of widths and styles. I had to wear men's boaters for most of my school life in the 1990s as they just didn't make size 9s in any nice shoes - hooray for Online shopping and the rise of the taller woman (no pun intended!).

ReplyDeleteSaha, if you can save up and splash out, Duo is a great place to start. They do their boots according to calf width, and with three foot widths, and there are always plenty of great styles in a 9.

After having my daughter, my feet have expanded from a size 8 normalish width to a size 9 extra wide and I have been really struggling to find shoes that fit, particularly as my feet are very sore most of the time. I went to a wedding recently and couldn't find the one pair of sandals that fit me and would have looked okay with my dress so I ended up wearing a very casual, worn black pair, more suitable for work than for a wedding. I felt so self-conscious the whole day long. Now I can see that there are places to get elegant but comfortable large, wide fit shoes. I am SOOOOO happy! The Birds of Prey site looks amazing, I am so tempted to design my own shoes, can't wait for the next invitation so I have an excuse to do so.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone else tire of this process? I am of average height but have always had massive feet, and sadly I passed this genetic nightmare to my daughter. She is 14, is 5'11 and has just outgrown her size 10 shoes. Having gone through this myself I know how hard it is for her to feel "normal" when we can't find a well fitting pair of shoes that are similar to the shoes all the other girls wear, but her problem is harder to address as she has very slim feet. I now wear men's size 12uk footwear and as I have broad feet find that any form of shoe in the men's range fits me well but we have tried her in men's footwear and her feer rattle inside the shoes. She is still growing and we are on a restricted budget and having to source and pay for new shoes every 3-4 months (whether she has outgrown the previous pair, is experiencing pain from the shoes being too loose and offering no real support or that they are just badly made and do not withstand the lifestlye of an active teen) is getting ridiculous. I am now at the stage where I would consider training in designing and making my own shoes if I thought it would help. Surely there are more young people with the same issue ... why does the thought of shoe shopping have to fill us both with dread and trepidation?
