Cocktail Hour: Blood and Sand

I love reading about the origins of cocktails. The Shirley Temple is my favourite, which was made for the actress when she was too young for proper drinkies. But I hadn't heard the story of the Blood and Sand until recently.

I don't know of any other cocktail created for a film. Blood and Sand starred Rudolph Valentino and this cocktail was created for the premier in 1922. All of the best cocktails we made in the 20s, I'm sure of it. Luckily, this drink is rather tasty. Not unlike a Manhattan, but made with a peaty Scotch instead.

You'll need:
  • 25ml Scotch
  • 25ml sweet Vermouth
  • 25ml cherry liqueur
  • 25ml orange juice
  • Orange peel
Shake it!

Add everything into a cocktail shaker with ice, shake about and strain into a cocktail glass. Add the orange peel and then spend the rest of the evening doing excellent impression of old school Hollywood actors.
