Bollocks to Baking: Cox, Cookies & Cake
Oh look! Another cupcakery in London! How original.
I'll be honest, I'm a little bit over-cupcaked. I'm not sure we need anymore cupcakeries, do we? No. Probably not. And that's probably why I've avoided trying the cakes at Cox, Cookies & Cake. Despite the fabulous design, all neon sex shopped-up and enticing me in, I'd just... rather have a biscuit. Even the bare-chested men couldn't actually get me through the door to buy something. Mostly because they looked freezing.
Well that was a giant mistake. Because the cake here is nothing short of outstanding. There's no doubting that the cakes look fabulous. The designs are fab. If you want breast-shaped cake with your tea, anyway. I spend too much time avoiding marzipan icing to get too excited about that, but I was amused.
See, the shop might have been designed by Patrick Cox, but the cakes are from none other than Eric Lanlard, and he knows his way around a mixing bowl. I don't think I've ever had a better lemon cake than the one I had from here. The chocolate cake was less impressive, but I did eat it the day after I bought it. Wish I'd bought two lemon cakes now.
The arty cakes look lovely (especially the Warhol-inspired Pop cake my friend tried), but I'm not going to pay £4 for a cupcake. Ever. It's just a cupcake. Instead, I'll be happy to pay £2.50 for one of the less fancy cakes, they're pretty and super tasty.
I might be a little 'over' cupcakes. But Cox, Cookies & Cake is a little more special then pink and frosting and edible glitter. These guys are good. The shop is amazing (bet you walk past it thinking it's a sex shop) and the staff are super friendly. I'll never pay four quid for a cupcake, but I'll be back for their lemon cake as soon as possible.
Cox, Cookies & Cake is on Brewer Street in Soho. Go, eat their lemon cake.

£4 for a cupcake?!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYes. I know. BUT, the standard priced ones are worth every penny.
ReplyDeleteThe Warhol one WAS pretty tasty, but no, not worth £4.
ReplyDeleteDid a taste test recently when organising a vintage tea party for my bosses daughter and the Cox cakes came out no better than the Fortnum and Masons own ones and Selfridges selection I got which were all at least 1 pound cheaper. It's a nice gimmick but I think it's an ephemeral one at best.
ReplyDeleteBut the cheaper ones are worth paying for. The cake itself is fantastic.
