Very Swish: Clarks Un Swish Sandals

Guys, help me out here: can you reconcile comfort with stylish shoes?

Number 22 in Buzzfeed's 30 Signs You're Almost 30 is "You start buying shoes based on 'comfort'." I've been almost 30 since I was a teenager in that case, and now I actually am 30, I simply cannot be arsed to prance around like The Little Mermaid with shoes pinching my every step.

That said, I did a good search for comfortable, supportive summer shoes a few months back and it was HORRIFYING. A wasteland of ghastly things that did not inspire me to go and have fun times at all. But summer was coming, and with that the call to bare your toes and paint them lovely colours.
So then, sandals. Horrible things with paper-thin soles that massacre your feet and let all the sand in, right? Wrong. Or at least, wrong depending on where you shop.

I wanted to get some summery shoes that I could stomp around in without having to have a sit down every 10 minutes, and having been pleasantly pleased by Clarks collaboration with Eley Kishimoto earlier in the year, I ordered loads of size 9s on their website and had them delivered to the store to try on.
Oh me? Just casually doing some writing in LM Montgomery territory
The metallic Un Swish sandals are brilliant. They look terrifyingly like they might be all-terrain action sandals on the website, but not at all when they're on your feet. You can wear them with pretty much anything, and go anywhere because they're so well-cushioned. This is a perfect excuse to show me wearing them somewhere. In this case ACTUAL LOVERS LANE FROM ACTUAL GREEN GABLES! Hurray for Canada.

One of the reasons that I love these sandals is that they are ridiculously comfortable. They let your feet breathe, unsurprisingly, and offer lots of support and flexibility. I paid £54.99, which caused me to do a fairly sharp intake of breath, but I figured I'd rather fork out for something that would be kind to me feet and last longer than two months. ** the white patents are in the sale at £39.99. Thanks pigswotfly!**

This is a monumentally unflattering photo of them from the Clarks website. Looking at them from the side, the sole is not the sexiest thing in the world, but I have yet to get on my hands and knees on the pavement and stare fixedly at people's soles so that's fine.

You can also get them in black patent and they are available in sizes 3 to 9.

Technically, given that you can get them in a size 9, this could also be a tall girl treat, but given that summer is a great time for wearing "normal" high street clothes (shorts! Shirts! Done) there doesn't seem to be as whopping a need for tall posts as in the cooler months when length is everything. Although, FYI tall girls, I've recently been absolutely addicted to my sheer M&S patterned shirt from Limited Edition - amazingly long sleeves.

To adventures! And parties! And beyond!

    1. I ordered in MASSES. I wasn't thinking I'd take these in a million years until I tried them - funnily enough, the other stuff that looked nicer online just didn't quite work on.

    2. What are you writing, Kat? Is it real writing, or are you doing a Jez and pretending to write for photo purposes?

    3. I tried to write some of my book (if you can call 4,500 words a book. HA!) but just ended up writing about how utterly beautiful the trees and surroundings were. I was borrowing Elizabeth's pen because I had forgotten to bring one on holiday like the brilliant writer I am.

  3. Yes, they look so lovely on you but think I would have also been put off by the online photo.

Also: ACTUAL LOVERS LANE FROM ACTUAL GREEN GABLES!

  4. Thank you so much for this post! I've had arthritis in my ankles since my mid-twenties, and it's near impossible to buy supportive, comfortable shoes that look good (completely flat shoes are just as agonising as heels – the shape of these Clarks' soles are, unfortunately, how it has to be).

I will be buying a pair of these!

    1. Oh poor you Dog Biscuit! I completely agree with you on flat shoes - they kill feet stone dead. These are great - enjoy.

  5. Being a lady of somewhat ample girth, and with my poor feet suffering and swollen as a result, I always struggle to find comfortable summer shoes. Try these - http://www.hottershoes.com/en/info/ExtraWide - they do a nice range, great colours, and have special deals (£10 off + free delivery atm). I've now bought 3 pairs of these sandals http://www.hottershoes.com/en/SUMMER-2013/Classics/59625_vista-extra-wide-sandals - and they're a delight to put on. And to walk in...

  6. I really love these - they look so dreamily comfy! And yes I'm 30 and yes I have worn heels probably on 2-3 occasions in the last 2 years! If it ain't a brogue, I;m genuinely not that interested.

    1. I'm with you there Sam! Although I rather love my heels - just not in summer when it's boiling. There's a cracking blog called En Brogue that you might like, it's by an ex-Times stylist and the shoes are to die for.

  7. I stupidly wore my (usually comfy) New Look wedges to London last Friday in 25°c heat. When I got home, my feet looked like the inside of a clinical waste bin. I had a couple of recommendations for comfy, nice looking sandals - Fly and Geox. The Geox ones look lovely and I bet they are comfy too (I've not tried any on yet) but they are more expensive than New Look sadly. Here is the link for anyone who is interested (or if you've tried them I would love to hear how you got on). http://uk.geox.com/category/women-s-apparels_2695/women-s-sandals_2761.uts
