A couple of weeks ago Kat told you all about SE1 - the area that until very recently she called home. Not all of the Domestic Sluts live in London, but most of the ones that do tend to favour south of the river. Sluttery HQ is just down the road from Greenwich, my favourite place in London. I've lived here for ten years and there's always something new to explore.
Most recently was my little jaunt to The Fan Musuem, which is a cool and quirky little place to visit. And just close enough to my favourite secret cafe La Fleur on Royal Hill - if it's sunny, pop through the back and sit in their secret garden, eating lemon tart while trying to get the attention of cuddly but snooty Mimi the tabby cat. Royal Hill is a destination in itself - a wonderful butchers, greengrocers, fishmongers and cheese shop all line up next to one another making you spend your money (and you will). And of course, The Greenwich Union which is my most favourite of favourite pubs.
Fancy doing some shopping? Instead of heading into town, you need to go in search of The Junk Shop. Until last week I had no idea just how big it was. Three floors of happy antique hunting! They excel at table and glassware - I'm very happy with the gin dispenser I bought for under a tenner. And it's taken a while to come into its own, but the clock tower market is worth a browse before heading to the indoor market. The best parts of the market are (obviously) the churro stand and the animal puppet stall. But don't forget the shops around the outside, especially Cherry Picked and The Home Front.
Greenwich actually doesn't have much in the way of shops, but the ones it does have are excellent. Looking for vintage? It's hard to come out of 360 Degrees without buying something, but make sure you pop to Beehive (for seventies dresses and amazing shoes) and The Emporium (for sunglasses, leather gloves and accessories). Not into vintage? Then head to the most beautiful branch of Joy there is. It's in a converted public baths, and utterly beautiful. Bullfrogs is a bit more high street (and dare I say it, sometimes verges on tacky), but their collection of Fever and Closet dresses will keep you happy.
I know I'm meant to tell you to head to Greenwich Park now. And I should, it's beautiful and you get a cracking view of London. But I went to Greenwich University and the buildings are too gorgeous to ignore so it's my favourite picnic spot. Especially if you get pecan pie and coffee from Rhodes on the way. Don't forget to check out the Painted Hall, it's really quite special.
For drinks and dinner you have less choices than you'd think. The sad fact is that most restaurants in Greenwich are tailored to the tourists. Most serve average food that's overpriced. But Bianco 43 serves up amazing pizzas and The Spread Eagle is the most beautiful bar in South East London. My favourite place? If you can find it, Greenwich's very best kept secret is a little jazz bar by the park called Oliver's. I would tell you exactly where it is, but half the fun of Greenwich is stumbling upon something new and exciting.

I visited the Greenwich Union after your repeated cooing about it on twitter. Absolutely lovely place.
ReplyDeleteHehe! I sometimes (on very fun days) get to work from there.
ReplyDeleteLove this, Sian! I'm especially keen on Oliver's. Hmm, perhaps my first guest post should be (*yet another*) love letter to my little pocket of North-East......
ReplyDeleteWow. You've just brought back some wonderful memories. I grew up in Blackheath and loved Greenwich. Thank you so much. Hopefully one day I get back to that side of the world to create some new memories
ReplyDeleteDo it Sarah! One day I'll even come out from my little corner of London to come and see it for myself.
ReplyDeleteKimlib, how long since you've been back?
This post makes me so incredibly happy and proud of my birthplace. I lived down the road in New Cross/Brockley for 7 years and a bit of my heart will always be in Southeast London, innit.
ReplyDeleteI think that's something true of the north/ south of the river thing in London. Your heart belongs to one area, always. I defected to North London for six months and spent most of my time itching to come back south.
ReplyDeletei lived in greenwich for 10 years left 9 years ago, happy days, we lived right by the cutty sark, is the pie n mash shop still there xxx
ReplyDeleteStumbling across this post made me smile - Greenwich is my London love story too. I've lived in Islington, Cricklewood and Bermondsey but recently bought a flat in Greenwich and it feels the most like home. Like all good lovers though, it has a few secrets...thanks for not revealing the exact location of Olivers - I like to think that little gem is ours and ours alone! <3
