The Amazings
People are amazing. Despite living in London and having cynicism drummed into me as soon as I step onto the tube, I never stop thinking that people are amazing. The Domestic Sluts are a curious bunch. We like learning, and we like asking questions. We're damn nosey, basically.
I could not be more excited about The Amazings.
The Amazings is an initiative in East London, and I'm willing it to become something that continues to grow across the country. They work with people who have retired and create amazing experiences and classes using those skills. What's on at the minute? Retro up-dos are being taught by Michael for £15, there's a street photography class I've got my eye on (a bargain at £25) and loads more classes covering craft, food and make-up. The topics will no doubt change throughout the year and hopefully more unusual experiences will be added as the classes get more popular. It's such a fabulous idea.
Are the more initiatives like this around the country? Tell us about them so everyone can enjoy amazing things!

This sounds not unlike the University of the Third Age (U3A), which offers over fifties a wide range of experiences across the country.
ReplyDeleteOoooh sounds interesting, Marion. I think I like that The Amazings classes are open to anyone!
ReplyDeleteSuch a great initiative - so chuffed they are getting the praise they deserve :) I'm desperate to get along to one of the sessions! Have you tested any out?
ReplyDeleteI'm going to do my very best to get to the street photography course, Ruth! Just need to have more than £3 in my pathetic-looking bank account.
ReplyDeleteI like that this has been tagged with "fucking brilliant".
ReplyDeleteYes, the street photography one looks super. I have my eye on a hair up do skills one too!
ReplyDeleteHi Sian - know all about you from my 2 lovely sons,Tom & Ben-(Ben gave me Domestic Sluttery for Christmas,a wonderful book)Having lived & worked by Shirley Conran's famous approach to multi-tasking that "life is too short for stuffing a mushroom" it resonates.Am fizzing with ideas for follow up
ReplyDeleteHi Colette! So pleased you're enjoying your book. Tom's advice (and cake testing and wine buying) was very helpful indeed!
ReplyDeleteI used to work with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme (RSVP) at Community Service Volunteers. But this looks much better to be honest. RSVP was generally about knitting, whereas I can imagine my mum being in to this being the funky 70-something she is.
