Sluttery Travels: La Rosa, Whitby

When a hotel heads up its website with 'Victorian Seaside Fun', I get quite excited. I truly love old British seaside towns. Give me a cream tea, a blustery walk and a shit plastic windmill that doesn't work and I'm happy.

La Rosa is a curious little place, somewhat inspired by fairy tales since Lewis Carroll was said to holiday at 5 East Terrace where the hotel stands (there's a blue plaque and everything). Now the rooms are named after Angela Carter's Little Red, Bram Stoker and Lewis himself.

Most of the rooms have sea views, and there's a huge attic room called The Crow's Nest that sleeps six.

There's a little tea room and a bar that serves tapas and cocktails where the hotel 'aim to welcome people of all types except racists, bigots or puritans'. Nicely put. They also specify that the bar is not a nightclub - they're more about the romance and fun that finishes at midnight.

Luckily, I turn into a little old lady when I go to the seaside. I'm invariably tucked up in bed with a cuppa by 10pm reading a good book.

La Rosa looks like a truly gorgeous hotel to visit, and a room here will cost you as little as £86 a night, maybe cheaper if you're lucky enough to get a late deal. Breakfast is served as a little picnic basket in bed so you get croissants and jam and tasty things. It's not a rock 'n' roll hotel, but it looks rather special.

  1. That place looks fab! We're just about to book a short break to Whitby, so I've just phoned them up to check availability. They seem very lovely and we're going to call back at the end of the week (when we've been paid!) and book!

You have just sorted our holiday for us! Thank you!

    2. Will do! And I've realised pay day is tomorrow (you think I'd know that as I'm my own boss!!!) so I can book in before everyone else snaps up the rooms!

  3. Hi all, thanks so much for this, and for the lovely comments. Helen, I did get a feeling that you might have found us via here. One quick offer, stay with us in May, and mention Domestic Sluttery and you can have any room for £99 including breakfast, subject to availability. Actual love, Clem, (hotel manager) xx

    1. I'm getting quite excited now! I'll call back tomorrow to book... question is which room?! My other half was quite disappointed that the pirate theme was in the attic room... we might have to come back with some friends in future so we have an excuse to stay up there! Xx

  7. Yay! My lovely hometown! My dad used to live in the top flat of 5 East Terrace - fab views!. At the bottom of the stairs was a HUGE mirror which was supposed to be the inspiration for 'Through the Looking Glass'. Don't get back to Whitby as often as I'd like (I now live in South Wales) but will certainly pop in for afternoon tea when I'm next there! Cheryl x
