Baking for Beginners: Granny's Easy Treacle Sponge Pudding

My Granny is rad. Seriously, this lady is the ultimate Mother/Granny. She has spent her whole life taking care of everyone. She was Mother to 4 rowdy children, and is now Grandmother to 10 even rowdier grandchildren (of which I was the first). She is the ultimate Domestic Goddess, along with dragging this rabble through childhood she was cooking/cleaning/sorting/organising….the whole shabang. Even now, when I go to stay she wakes me up at the crack of dawn to tell me she’s got the shower running already so it was warm for me. And by the time you get down to breakfast, there is a breakfast bowl waiting and the kettle is on. Thursday is dobie-day (as she calls it) and I have never known or seen anyone perfectly wash and iron clothes the way she does. It is a sight to behold.

The point is, my Granny is pretty spectacular. She is the kind of woman who insists you have a huge slice of Treacle Sponge Pudding after dinner. And being the Mother Hen to so many, she has some excellent easy-peasy recipes to follow.

Granny has kindly shared her Treacle Sponge Pudding recipe with us, because she knows how terribly busy us ladies are and yet we still need some sticky sweet goodness in our lives. Using one bowl, a pudding basin and a microwave, you can have amazing pudding in a matter of minutes. If this isn’t Domestic Sluttery, I don’t know what is.

You will need:
  • 6 tbsp Golden Syrup
  • 100g Butter
  • 100 g Caster Sugar
  • 2 Eggs
  • 150g Self-Raising Flour
  • 4 tbsp Milk
Make It!
  • Grease a 1.5 litre pudding basin and spoon 4 tablespoons of golden syrup into the bottom.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the butter, sugar, eggs, flour and milk (I might have cheated and melted the butter slightly in the microwave for 20 seconds). Beat until smooth and creamy.
  • Pour the mixture carefully into the pudding basin and smooth over the top.
  • Place in the microwave and cook for 7 minutes on medium.
  • Turn out onto a plate and drizzle a further 2 tablespoons of warmed golden syrup over the pudding.
  • Serve with lashings of cream or vanilla ice cream.

  1. This is something my Mama does too (and she sounds just like your Granny!) and this whole post made me grin from ear to ear. And crave treacle. All good things for Friday morning. Bravo! x

  2. Your granny sounds very much like mine, who sadly is no longer with me :-( But this is what I'd like to be like when I grow up! ;-) Thank you for sharing this recipe. I'll have to plod on with the one I do in my oven until I get a microwave, which is very similar.
