Sluttishly Practical: Cheery Spring Cleaning

Although we'd rather be having a drink and a snack than doing it, there's no getting away from the fact that cleaning is pretty essential. That doesn't mean it has to be dull though. I've been on the hunt to find things to help cheer the whole process up a bit.

I can't even begin to think about cleaning without having some rubber gloves. My skin is quite sensitive and I don't want to be ruining my nail varnish. Plain old marigolds won't cut it though. I want these flower power ones by Elliott's. You can get them for £2.50 from Maha Home.

Also, if you put on some hand cream before you put rubber gloves on, the heat from the washing up water will help leave you with lovely soft hands. Washing up is still rubbish though isn't it? Would these dishcloths help motivate you to do it?

You can choose from the cat, owl or hen for £3.75 each from Hunkydory Home. Or you could get these Sarah Smith Eco Cloths for £1.99 from Dunelm. I use mine for general cleaning and they can be machine washed so you can use them again and again.

The final bane of my life though is dust bunnies. Having a house with wooden and slate floors is ace but every day I find myself having to get the broom out to sweep pesky little balls of fluff away. This brush and pan set from John Lewis means I don't have to do a whole lot of bending and faffing which can only be a good thing. It's £23.

Apart from getting someone to do it for us, have you got any ace cleaning tips to help make out lives easier? Let us know in the comments!

  1. I find that buying everything in Lakeland helps. I LOVE Lakeland. Their oven cleaner gel is excellent (i.e. the only effort required is painting it on and then remembering to wipe it off before dinner time).

    1. Lakeland is dangerous. Only because I want buy everything in there. Will give the oven cleaner a try.

  2. Oh! And E-cloths are excellent - you just have to dampen them, no cleaning sprays required. I've got one of their mops and it's made cleaning the kitchen floor a DREAM*

*easier than before, still doesn't mean I do it very often.

  4. p.s. I bought the brush set. Along with a bon-bon dish shaped like an upturned umbrella (could not resist).

    1. Ah, the bon-bon dish is a treat for even thinking about doing the cleaning!

    2. I like your thinking. (Good thing I did clean - about two days later, we got a letter announcing an impending letting agent inspection!)

  5. I heart my dishwasher. I still have to wash some stuff up though. Pretty things might help.

Hand cream doubled up with cotton gloves (those ones from the body shop that make you feel like a mime artist) keep hands that wash dishes in rubber gloves soft and also stop them ponging of latex.

Hoover everything. Crumbs off the worktops, hairs off bathroom tiles, dust off any surface on which it accumulates. A pink hoover might help with that?

  6. Loving Lakeland - my secret crush! It's very indulgent but if you've got hard floors the Roomba auto vac is incredible - it's not bad on carpet either. Plus kids learn to pick up the lego because the roomba doesn't discriminate. Switch it on and off it goes - haven't tried other, cheaper models but it can't be too hard to copy - a robot vac is the way to go!
