Sluttery Travels: Peters Tower, Devon

When it comes to holidays, I'm often torn between self-catering and hotels. I like mini bars. I like room service. I like all the TV channels. But I also like to do my own thing. I want to make breakfast at midday and if I don't feel like it, I don't want to have to get dressed all day. This time, self-catering won. And I found myself in Peters Tower in Devon.

In the little village of Lympstone in Devon, just three and a half hours from London, Peters Tower sits directly on the estuary. OK, so it's not exactly a golden sandy beach, but you get a kind of beachy/countryside feel all at the same time. It's what you'd call a perfect winter beach. And you get views like this from your window.

You get the whole tower to yourself. It's very cute indeed. There are 45 steps from top to bottom. All winding up this beautiful spiral staircase.

The rooms are tiny. Bunk beds! Actually bunk beds! Of course, I had the top one. Everything you need is here, but it's simple and basic. The tower's clock (conveniently located by the bedroom) chimes from 7am until 10pm which might be annoying for some, but Peters Tower is such a unique place to stay. It's quirky, has great views and you're two minutes away from the water. And warm homemade scones and Devonshire clotted cream if you head in the other direction.

I absolutely loved my trip to Peters Tower and want to go back tomorrow. Want to stay here? You'll pay about £279 for three nights. Head over to the Landmark Trust's website for more information, and loads more exciting places to stay in the UK.

  1. Never actually been to Lympstone. All you see when you're on the train is an Army barracks. You wouldn't realise that it's got all that to it as well.

  2. Oh it's beautiful! Strange little place, and not actually geared towards tourists, which I really liked.
