Cocktail Hour: The Kraken Perfect Storm

There is always room for rum in my life so when a bottle of such rummy goodness was delivered, it was a good day indeed. The Kraken is a dark spiced rum which comes in one of the best bottles I've seen in a while - a proper, two handled flagon. Given that I've not drunk spiced rum since Sailor Jerry changed their recipe, I was intrigued to see if this would be a good, or better, substitute.

Well... it is good. It smells like Kahlua which is a bit odd but not unpleasant, more unexpected. I tried it as recommended in a 'Perfect Storm' and I tried it neat (all in the name of thorough research you understand!). Drunk neat, it's a bit sharp but then very warming and gently flavoured. It does taste a little like Kahlua but has a vanilla-y aftertaste. When it's mixed with the ginger beer, it becomes quite mellow and less harsh than normal rum. I'd recommend mixing up a 'Perfect Storm' and enjoying it in the sunshine. Responsibly, of course.

The Perfect Storm

You will need:
  • 50ml Kraken rum
  • 25ml fresh lime juice
  • 5ml sugar syrup
  • 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
  • Ginger beer
Shake it!

Grab yourself your favourite highball glass, fill it with ice and mix in the rum, lime juice, sugar syrup and bitters. Top off with ginger beer - the hotter the better! - and garnish with a wedge of lime.

The Kraken Rum is available from The Drink Shop for £21.95 and from other off-licences and supermarkets.
