Yay or Nay: Dry Shampoo

This weekend, I mentioned on our Facebook page that I was going out dancing on Easter Sunday and had cheated while getting ready. Instead of spending hours doing my hair and make-up, I opted for an extra long nap and used dry shampoo. Yep, a quick spray of the canned goodness and I was ready to go.

Yet some of you were quite adamant that it should only be used at festivals, and even Sunday dancing is not an excuse for such laziness.

But I am lazy. I have super long, thick hair and it usually takes a good hour to wash and style. That's a lot of faffing. I'm not one for faffing on a Sunday. There was dancing to be done and I was already late! There's a lot to be said for the styling perks - dry shampoo can be very handy when you're trying to put your hair up and it's being stubborn.

For everyone who loves a bit of Batiste (just £1.49 from Superdrug), there's someone who hates it and thinks it's more than a little bit gross. Let's settle this once and for all with a little poll. Dry Shampoo: yay or nay?

  1. Never used it but as a busy mama of 3 I'm pretty sure it could be my new best friend xx

  2. It's not like I use it every day (that would be gross), but it's very handy to have a can in emergencies!

    1. Agree entirely - it's definately for emergency use - we have a communal can in our office. Makes life a LOT easier than drying hair under the hand dryer!

  3. It's awesome. And the Batiste stuff even smells nice.

    1. It does, but honestly I'm not always keen on the tropical scent. It's very eau de you haven't washed your hair when I actually want to smell of Chanel.

I'm surprised you use it having such short hair. Does this make you lazier than me?

    2. They do special editions/different scents, which are good if you want to avoid the traditional festi-hair smell! ;)

    3. Siany, I have LOADS of hair now. Loads of it. Shoulder length!

    4. I'm doing my own little Lady Godiva impression these days. (It's a bit chilly.)

Time for a trip back to Taylor Taylor.

  4. This is a MUST for my armory of hair products. Obv it's good for when I don't have time to do a full hair wash, but mostly I use it to help boost fringes or roots on in-between days. It's also great to add volume when styling! If you know how to use it, it can be an invaluable bit of hair kit.

  5. It's not actually that good to wash your hair every day if you have dry hair or a very sensitive scalp (I've been advised, by professionals, to wash every other day)- and when I do I use a very rich conditioner so my hair is super smooth. Having dry shampoo to hand is great for giving 'grip' to an up-do on the first day, and freshening second day hair if I want to wear it down.

It's only recently people have got obsessed with washing every head of hair hair every day (with 2 applications of shampoo) whether hair is dry or greasy. Most wedding hairstylists ask for second-day hair, after all! I'm not saying never wash it, but most people can get by on every other day.

  6. Can I admit to using dry shampoo every other day? It's great for adding a bit of extra volume to my fine hair. Otherwise I'd have to be washing and blow drying my hair every day which is just a faff, especially when it's just flat not dirty. I've tried a few different variations (including hair powder stuff) but Batiste is the best.

  7. Dry shampoo is my lifeline - I went from washing my hair every other day to once a week at most - a few blasts of dry shampoo on the roots after about day three works a treat. I colour my hair and it helps keep the red really vivid. It can start to stink a bit sometimes, but I just spray a bit of Chanel No 5 in it. I use Batiste original but Batiste XXL volume is AMAZING for when you want big, sticky hair. Yes, I am a slut :)

  8. Amazing stuff, my hair is full of it as I am typing this as I couldn't be bothered to wash it this morning as it'll jsut get all manky again tonight at the gym! I also use a bit in clean hair on a night out to give it a bit of ooomph.

  9. I'm a hairdresser and not only do I personally love to use dry shampoo but I tell pretty much every one of my clients that they should love it too, haha! Unless you have extra greasy, extra baby-fine hair, there is absolutely no reason to be washing your hair everyday. I recommend every other day at the very most and encourage my clients that can to go longer. It keeps your hair from drying out and helps preserve and prolong your hair color!

    1. I'm always astounded that people wash their hair every day. Mine always looks better second day in. Also, IT'S A MASSIVE FAFF.

  10. I don't wash my hair everyday unless I'm going to the gym - dry shampoo is great for giving my fine hair oomph to style it and also great if I wake up and my hormones have given my greasy hair overnight and I haven't got time to wash and dry it

  11. Also I find that if it's getting time for me to get my hair highlighted again it makes my dark roots look a little bit less offensive!

  12. It has CHANGED MY LIFE!! No longer needing to shampoo & blowdry every single day, and it makes it all styleable!!

I have dark brown hair, and always thought I couldn't use it, until I was told about the Dark Brown version - a miracle!

Little tip I picked up to avoid the ghostly hue - spray direct onto your hairbrush, then spray a little hairspray on top...

  13. Sometimes I use it if my hair needs washing but I'm already late for work, but I still need to tie my hair up afterwards as it only stops it looking greasy, it doesn't actually clean it, and I do then need to wash it properly as soon as I get the chance or it makes my head start to itch. I don't use the Batiste one though as if you've got thick hair those little cans don't last long.

  14. Dry shampoo is awesome. I wash my hair every day but still have some at work to give my fringe a spray on 'greasy forehead' days. It's also ace at adding volume, especially if you're beehiving. Since I have bleached platinum blonde hair I concur with Trixy - it's amazing at taking the edge off heavy roots. All round awesomeness :D

  15. I agree with all the people who say we don't need to wash our hair every day. I don't use dry shampoo on all the in between days either but it's handy to have a can around sometimes. My sister especially likes it for sorting out a greasy fringe when the rest of your hair's ok. My hair is really short but it takes longer to style than when it was long so dry shampoo was a revelation to me! Btw I like Charles Worthington better than Batiste, just to be controversial!

  16. I have thick curly hair that gets dry, rather than greasy, on its second day, so I don't think it would work for me- unless any curly haired ladies can tell me otherwise? I just pile on a load of frizz creme and stick it in a bun. Lazy lazy lazy.

  17. I have a friend who SWEARS by it, so much so I bought myself some. However, I'm a little scared of using it on dirty hair and then going out and it wearing off and being left with rubbish greasy locks! I sometimes do a few half-arsed spritzes on pretty much clean hair to make an effort to use it up, but that's probably the extent. Plus, it makes me look like I have grey hair at the roots! Does no-one else have that??

    1. if it looks like you have grey roots try rubbing it in a bit more, and brush out fully, usually it's a build up of product. And don't worry about it wearing off, it doesn't, I dance for hours using batiste and get very sweaty, but the hair doesn't!!

  18. I LOVE dry shampoo. It means that I can actually go more than one day without washing my locks (I have been known to go 4...gross...but good for my hair).
I bought the coconut smelling one too, which him indoors loves. He sniffs my hair at every opportunity.

  19. Good lord, someone told you off for using it? Clearly someone with wash and go hair, rather than high maintenance takes-me-two-hours hair that gets washed every other day (or *shhh!* occasionally leave it until the third day). I <3 Batiste.

  20. Sorry to be the lone voice of dissent, but I hate it, especially Batsiste. The smell makes me gag, and I just can't get it to look anything other than slightly-less-grubby. I am one of those freaks who likes washing her hair every day, as it's really short and fine, and looks ridiculous the second day. Having said that, I'm tempted to try the Klorene one for a bit of a boost if I'm going out in the evening...

    1. Sounds like it totally depends on hair type, Sarah.

    2. Oh, I agree. My old flatmate used to get through tonnes of the stuff, as she has really long, thick, wavy hair and you could never tell that she was using it. I wish I could use it without looking dirty! So handy...

  21. I have very fine natural blonde hair that I wash once or even twice a day - if I don't it looks horrendously greasy and still does even after washing. I have started using Batiste dry shampoo to try and train my hair and get my natural oils back so that it won't go greasy straight away. I use it a couple days a week when I don't have social occasions to give my hair a rest from the relentless washing regime. If you are blonde I would recommend the 'Blonde' dry shampoo and not the original as the original one did not make my hair look clean but the 'blonde' one does.

  22. I use it all the time, I have 2 kids and colour my hair aggressively red, so don't have enough spare time to colour my hair reguarly to keep it bright and shocking!! And washing drains the colour so quickly, you'll never open my bathroom cabinet and not see a can of Batiste in there, my favourite at the moment is blush, although in winter it's boho

  23. God yes. Especially when I had a fringe. Only way to go out after work and not feel and look as if I'd spent the day working in a chippy instead of at a desk.

    1. Wait, you don't have a fringe anymore?

      Delete
    2. No, sadly I am fringeless. Australia just doesn't have the climate for me to have a fringe, even with all the dry shampoo in the world. I may re-instate it when I move back though. You can help me decide.

  24. I discovered the joys of dry shampoo a few months ago and I love it! I wash my hair every day, because I have a short bob with a fringe and it looks horrific and sticks out at odd angles when I wake up, but even so my fringe can still start to look a little bit greasy by the end of the day. Dry shampoo is brilliant because if I'm going out after work I can just spray some on my fringe and make it look nice again!

  25. The coloured ones you can get now are brilliant, they don't leave the same chalky, @I've put talc on my head' finish that some of the older, regular versions do.

  26. I love, love, love dry shampoo, especially now I have a fringe. I only wash my hair every other day anyway, but this can sometimes save me on a day I've slept in and don't have time to wash & dry my hair, plus it's amazing if you're going out and just want to freshen up your hair. Could not be without it - I've even bought little bottles of it to put in my handbag now that I cycle to work and back!

  27. I swear by dry shampoo. It can actually give your hair added body and shine. Buy I don't like the brand you pictured - smells bit tacky. The Guardian did a really good review of a range a little while back that's worth checking out
