Not much in it you'd think for the average Domestic Slut. However, in this case appearances are deceptive. If you can skim past the book's pictures of 60-something toothless and balding men dishing out their bar stool advice, it's full of classic cocktails and the stories behind them that instantly evoke an older, classier time of drinking.
Take for example, this Prohibition Cocktail. As the name indicates it dates to the 1920s America, where banning booze had the effect of inspiring some pretty great cocktails. It's flavoursome and gentle on the taste buds despite the vast quantities of alcohol contained within a serving. With Prohibition TV drama Broadwalk Empire hitting the UK next month you know its only a matter of time before flapper fever sweeps the country. Better get your drinking strength up now...
You'll need:
- 50ml gin
- 50ml white wine
- 1 teaspoon orange juice
- Half teaspoon apricot brandy
- Mint leaves
Combine all liquid ingredients with crushed ice in a cocktail glass. Garnish with mint leaves.
Gimmee one of these right now!
ReplyDeleteDelish! But what's old fashioned about CAMRA and cardies? I'm in CAMRA and I wear (delightful, with furry collars and so forth) cardies. ;) Oh well that possibly gives me a reason to make these a few times!
ReplyDeletePerdita, I too am a lover of the cardigan. No disrespect to CAMRA either - as I keep being told, getting money off ale means more money to be spent on cocktails..!
ReplyDeleteOooh, that just made me smile, I just spotted it's in a Babysham glass :)
