Design Porn: Sarah Thirlwell Vessels
I saw some of Sarah Thirlwell’s work recently at Rochester Art Gallery and Craft Case in Kent and what I saw there inspired me to do some mid-afternoon cyber-stalking. Let me tell you, if I didn’t like her before, I certainly love that the first sentence on her website is that she ‘challenges the perceptions of traditional craft by celebrating them in a contemporary context’.
Using reclaimed materials such as acrylic plywood, perspex, recycled yoghurt pots and vending cups, Sarah uses the craft of wood turning and a damn good eye to turn them into beautiful and functional vessels. Although not what you’d call throwaway design, these babies are a serious investment. This one is a cool £700. Step away from the online store, Sam, step away.
If that is just a bit of a stretch post-Christmas, you can get one of these lovely miniature vessels, measuring just 7.6cm, for £35.
