Better off baking: Anima Cupcakes

I am very sad to report that as pretty as those cupcakes from Anima look, they were actually the worst cupcakes that I have ever had. I hate bad cupcakes.

:-(

Amina cupcakes made an appearance at the Thames Festival and I was drawn to the pretty little flowers and friendly faces behind the stall. So I happily handed over my £1.75 for a nectarine cupcake. I did not expect sloppy, watery frosting and dry tasteless sponge. I'm actually pretty certain that they were more than a day old.

Bad cupcakes make me sad. The whole reason for me buying a single cupcake is for a few minutes of sugary happiness and my cupcake from Amina was the exact opposite. It's National Cupcake Week! Only good cupcakes for us ladies this week! I'll just have to eat more until I find some tastier ones, but I definitely won't be trying Amina if I stumble upon them again. You really are better off baking your own.

I had no idea 'bad' cakes existed. It's like finding out about Father Christmas all over again.

  2. I know :-( We don't often write about bad things but after trying them, I had to report back.

It's a shame because they still look so very pretty!

  3. I've unfortunately had a few bad cupcakes and one of them was from these! Not nice at all -nothing worse when you get all excited about gorgeous cupcakes and yet they're nasty :(

  4. I tried one of these at Sunday Upmarket and I have to agree they were really bad. Luckily another cupcake stall has opened up near the Brick Lane entrance and will be buying from them from now on!

  5. I don't like writing bad reviews, but it seems I'm not the only one who had a bad experience!

Anon, which is the new cupcakery in Upmarket? I know Molly Bakes is there, I only hear good things about them :-)

  6. Sian, Molly Bakes is the one. I haven't tried theirs yet as I was unfortunate to pick up one of Anima's on that day before I saw them but I have heard great things too! They look delicious and they seem to do lots of different flavours and frostings. What would I do without decent cupcakes on Brick Lane?

  7. Ugh. It seems it wasn't just the one you had! Cupcakes are like pizza, there is no excuse for making a bad one. Especially when it's your business!!

  8. Unfortunately its not just the stalls in London - I've had a few bad cupcakes from shops too recently! I do think one of the saddest things is buying a stale cupcake - it looks pretty then you bite it and its gross!

  9. Wow. I'm amazed you all had such bad experiences! I did a google search for Anima since their site isn't up and running yet, and found your post. I had one of their cupcakes at the Thames festival last weekend and thought it was divine! Maybe i lucked upon a nice one in their apparently woeful selection? Anyways, good luck on your continuing search!

  11. I have to give a shout out to Angel Food Bakery, Brighton - their cupcakes are AMAZING! My daughters love them and they even make teeny tiny bite-size ones so you can indulge without the guilt. Yum! PLUS they run cupcake decorating classes so you can perfect the art of a pretty baking: www.angelfoodbakery.co.uk
