Bollocks to baking: Bea's of Bloomsbury

This might not be the right place to admit this, but until yesterday, I had never been to Bea's of Bloomsbury. Which I realise now is completely scandalous and almost a crime against cake. Oh my goodness the cake. I spent half an hour eyeing up the individual lemon meringues before I succumbed.

Best. Lemon meringue. Ever.

Light meringue, tart filling and perfect pastry. It's not easy to do a good meringue but Bea's is wonderful. It might seem pricey at £4 or so, but it's worth every single penny. And they also serve Luscombe organic drinks so I'm in love with them a little bit more.

I adore it here. There's a great little buzz about the place, the staff have fun and there's the occasional shit-zu puppy about the place. Ladies come here for tea, school girls come here for cake. Yesterday a little butterfly was fluttering about the place for no reason. Everyone comes here because it's lovely. I imagine they also come here for the wonderful afternoon tea as well.

Eight of your English pounds will get you a cupcake, a scone with jam and clotted cream, a mini blondie brownie, a mini brownie and a mini meringue. And of course you get a pot of tea as well. That's a sugary bargain, even if I'd like something a little more savoury to go alongside it.

If you haven't been, I suggest you go sharpish. It's like a little home from home, just with really awesome cake.

Bea's of Bloomsbury is halfway up Theobalds Road. The nearest tube is Chancery Lane, but it's a short walk from Farringdon, Russell Square and Holborn as well.

  3. I have been reading this blog for ages, but this is my first comment. Bea's is my favourite place to go for an afternoon tea. on sundays £13 will get you an unlimited plate of sandwiches to go with your cream tea. BUT there aren't many seats, so book or go at low times.
