In celebration I decided to treat them to an old favourite. As a kid my grandmother would often make these as an after-school treat (before fat content and five-a-day were much of a consideration). Whilst they may not be the healthiest snack, they're quick, easy and totally delicious!
You'll need:
- Pre-rolled puff pastry
- Double cream
- Strawberry jam
- Egg white
Make it!
- Pre-heat your oven to 180 degrees C. You can try and decide if Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' marriage is a sham or not whilst you do this, if you like.
- Cut the puff pastry into rectangles (around 3 inches wide, 6 long). You'll need one rectangle for each cake.
- Prick each sheet of pastry thoroughly, brush with a little egg white and pop in the over for 20 minutes, or until risen, puffed-up and golden.
- Meanwhile, whip your cream. I used an electric mixer but you can do it by hand if you feel the culinary need.
- Once risen and golden, remove the puffs from the oven and pop onto a cooling rack.
- once cooled, gently pull apart each rectangle, leaving you with one flat piece and one with a risen top.
- Spread the jam over the bottom puff layer, and cream onto the top. Sandwich together and enjoy!
Carrie, your suggestions of 'things to do whilst doing a quick culinary task' are fantastic! Personally, when folding in flour, I like to make important decisions such as what colour to paint my nails.
ReplyDeleteAh, shucks, thanks! I usually just write whatever it was that I was thinking whilst turning the oven on. Pre-heating is important, granted, but it isn't really very fun!
