Design Porn: Su Blackwell
It's not often I look at something made out of paper that costs thousands and think that I have to write about it immediately. But then, Su Blackwell isn't the kind of artist you stumble across every day (thanks for sharing, Josie).
Su creates the most beautiful book sculptures, often inspired by fairy tales and the books she's working with. This Wuthering Heights sculpture is now in the Brontë Parsonage Museum.
Check out the detail on the inside of that little house!
Of course, Su has done a Narnia sculpture. The couldn't be a more perfect subject for her style. It's spooky and magical and the tall trees look fabulous towering above the iconic lamppost.
Alice looks so pretty in this. I love that it's an instantly recognisable scene, but it's like no other interpretation I've ever seen.
Yep, that's a swing you can see. Just a swing, hanging off a tree that's coming out of an old, dusty book.
It's not just sculptures that Su works on, here's her work as a theatre installation. This is part of the set for The Snow Queen at The Rose Theatre in Kingston.
Now, I know it's unfair of me to show you Su's work when the sculptures can cost thousands. But you can buy prints and cards with her designs for a teeny tiny fraction of that price - the cards are just £3.50, the prints around £120. Not quite as fun as the pop up paper cut versions, but this Peter Pan print is quite special.
Even if you can't afford any of her artwork (that piece above was a set for a jewellery shoot in Vogue), do take a look around Su's website. It's beautifully designed and transports you from your desk right into a little magical world of books, art and fairy tales.
