Not Too Sluttishly Sweet: Raw Chocolate Pie

There are three words that are guaranteed to make me stop what I'm doing, turn around, veer into oncoming traffic and run towards them. Gluten free cake. Those beautiful words smiled back at me, yesterday, from the blackboard outside The Nutmeg Delicatessen in Tenterden and I obligingly stepped inside. Alongside a whole shelf of mouthwatering gluten free cakes were these Raw Chocolate Pies. Raw Chocolate Pies are made in St Ives by healthy food people, Living Food and they're dairy free, gluten free and sugar free (and delicious).
Give me a Dairy Milk any day, but no Bourneville, please. When I eat a square of 85% cocoa chocolate I don't notice the deeply rich flavours, instead I think "Ooh, that's bitter," so I didn't imagine I'd enjoy raw chocolate. As it turns out, I do and I ate my way through rather a lot of the free samples to prove it! The Naked Pie is raw chocolate with coconut butter, ground almonds, carob and agave nectar and is surprisingly smooth and not overly sweet.
I'm in love with the Cardamon and Apricot Pie. The flavours are very fresh and despite being incredibly virtuous it doesn't taste too much like it's doing you good. Strongly cardamon scented with sweet apricot, this is a seriously moreish bar of wonderful things. The ingredients are organic and Fairtrade, so it's not just your health that these lovely raw chocolate bars are kind to!
The Pink Himalayan Salt Pie is one of the most popular pies at The Nutmeg, so much so that they had run out of samples before I arrived! The salty sweet combination is brilliant at the best of times and pink salt and raw chocolate is no exception. Raw Chocolate Pies are £2.25 from rawchocpie.co.uk or they're available in delis and health food shops nationwide.

  1. *hand up* Caleigh, why are they called "pies" when they are clearly not pies? They sound lovely, but there is no pastry or baking involved.
