Design Porn: Jim Datz

Jim Datz is my kind of illustrator. He does his own thing, he runs all over the world drawing brilliant posters and he has an unusual take on whatever he sees around him. His city posters are dead on, showing the cities he illustrates in a heartwarming yet honest way. Quirky, without being twee. He's insightful, colourful, pretty damn wonderful.

Pigeons, rain, black cabs and nice lamp-posts. Posh hats in Bond Street and even a little Truman Brewery to show Brick Lane. This is such a subtle London poster, but it sums up London brilliantly.

Manhattan gets the same treatment. I love the little pig showing the Meatpacking Distract. The post motif works so well. You don't think about signs and lamp-posts, but they're instantly recognisable whatever city you're in.

The Brooklyn poster might actually be my favourite (perhaps because I can't find Datz's San Francisco design anywhere in the UK). There's something a little Dominic Clifford in the format, although the two have very different styles. I'd love him to take on Paris next - the swirly signs and poodles would be perfect.

They're around £190 framed and £110 unframed from Pedlars which is pricey (but then, everything in Pedlars seems expensive). They're $60 unframed from the US store Three Potato Four, but you'll have to cover shipping. Still, it might work out a little cheaper. They're gorgeous designs and I think I'd really like to invest in some Jim Datz.

  1. I adore Jim Datz's print so so much. But so much money. I'm seriously tempted to try the US option you suggest.
