You guys, I cannot believe I've been a Domestic Slut for three months now and haven't told you about Sexy Bovril yet. It's a Christmas-time drink though, so now is a perfect time to make it. Its origins are lost in the mists of time (i.e. I can't remember who told me about it) and it might have an official name, but I've always called it Sexy Bovril. Not sure if it's a cocktail or a souped-up soup, but either way it's an excellent way to (a) get warm and (b) get tipsy.
As a vegetarian I can't partake in its awesomeness, but I've made it for friends both at the start of a wintry dinner party and as pre-pub drinks at home, and they loved it. If anyone can think of a good veggie equivalent, then let me know. The thought of sadly crumbling a cube of green Oxo into boiling water just doesn't have the same impact. Sexy Oxo? No, no, no.
You will need:
4 parts beef consommé
2 parts vodka
Lemon
Tabasco sauce
Make it!
Heat the beef consommé until it's simmering. Add the vodka, a squeeze of lemon juice and tabasco sauce to taste. Pour into teacups or little bowls - something you can clutch for warmth - and hand out to your friends while they're still stamping the snow off their boots.
Savoury cocktail? Boozy soup? Who cares. Get it down you.

Utter filth.
ReplyDeleteMADNESS.
ReplyDeleteAnd I think I love it.
You may loathe me for suggesting this, but Marmite often works as a fine Bovril substitute in many a case...
ReplyDeleteDO IT. You won't regret it. And if you do, well, you'll be warmer and a bit drunk. It's all good.
ReplyDeleteUsually I put Bovril on my morning toast, but perhaps..
ReplyDeleteI'm intrigued and dubious...bovril, not sure that can ever be sexy, but I know I'll probably end up giving this a go!
ReplyDeleteMmm...I'll try it with Tequilla and see how it goes!
ReplyDeleteThis is either the best or worst thing I've ever heard of. I guess I should try it and find out. And like Alex, yes, was going to suggest vegetarians could try a Marmite/Vegemite version?
ReplyDeleteI thought maybe Marmite too?
ReplyDeletenot sure about the drink but I simply must know where the mug is from?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous - it's Habitat, from their covetable Concetta range: http://www.habitat.co.uk/concetta-mug/cups-&-mugs//fcp-product/993004
ReplyDeleteI drink hot Marmite (no vodka up until this point in my life but that is all about to change) and thought this was surely the most obvious substitute as a) it's vegetarian and b) it's practically the same?!
ReplyDeleteVickyb: I'm a stranger to hot Marmite. But rest assured that I will be giving it a go this weekend (with a good slug of vodka too).
