Book Review: Falling Cloudberries

I stumbled upon Falling Cloudberries by accident. Whilst we were staying in the Cotswolds this weekend (more about that faboulous trip later this week), I spied this tome on the coffee table. So Saturday morning was spent in bed, with a cuppa, getting excited by new recipes and reading Tessa Kiros' family stories.

This isn't a winter recipe book. There's a Finnish section (although herring and pickles just don't do it for me), but this book's strengths lie in the Mediterranean recipes. Everything sounds so simple and fresh. Calamari with chili, lemon and chicken, grilled lamb chops. Nothing fancy, nothing pretentious, just sticking to good fresh ingredients.

And if I'm honest, that's all I want from a recipe book. But it's not all this book gives. There's an interesting family history in Kiros' cooking. Her recipes are handed down from generations, inspired by family dinners and adapted to suit different occasions. And the photography is beautiful as well. I was perusing the hardback version, and despite me not trying a single recipe, I'm putting this straight on my Christmas list. It's a real feast, and once the sun comes out again, I imagine it'll stay permanently open on my kitchen counter. The paperback version is currently £8.64 on Amazon.

  3. I got this book on Valentines day this year from my boyfriend- and I was delighted! it's such a beautiful book, the stories and recipes are amazing! The hot and spicy chicken wings with blue cheese dressing is so tasty- and very easy to make, a perfect party dish.

  4. I love this book - my brother bought it for me for Christmas about four years ago. I cook from it loads and it's so beautiful!! If you're looking for a good winter book, he also bought me Roast Figs, Sugar Snow and I cook from that *all* the time. All of Diana Henry's book make me soooooo hungry!

  5. I've had this book for a while! Though I'm ashamed to say I've never actually cooked anything from it, it is my FAVOURITE cookbook to read curled up on the sofa with a cuppa and a black & white movie on in the background (which seems to add to the experience somehow).

  6. If you like this book try Tessa's book 'Apples for Jam'. It is my favourite cook book of all time.

  7. Apples for jam and falling cloudberries taught me to cook. I cook at least one thing from them every week. Fantastic!
