Cocktail Hour: Hot Buttered Rum

Yep, it's the time of year where you can drink as much as you like just as long as you heat the booze up and throw a bit of cinnamon in it. You'd never be able to walk around a market drinking a bottle of red wine! But once it's been mulled, you can drink as much as you like and no one cares in the slightest! Hooray! So this weekend, keep warm while you're watching the fireworks an make some hot buttered rum. Which is exactly what it sounds like.

You'll need these things:
  • 50ml dark dum
  • 25ml creme de cacao
  • 1/2 teaspoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • Cinnamon stick
  • Grated nutmeg
  • Cloves
  • Citrus peel
Make it!

Push the cloves into the citrus peel and add to some boiling water with the cinnamon stick, the sugar and butter. Add your boozey stuff and heat until warm. Pour into a huge coffee mug (or a flask if you're going to the fireworks and sprinkle the nutmeg on top. Walk about with rosy cheeks and beaming smile.

  1. How much water did you use? Can't be having it too weak now. I wouldn't forgive myself!

Also, is this recipe just for 1 serving? Need to be well prepared for the fireworks outing tomorrow!

  2. You really don't need much water for one serving - about half a coffee cup maybe?

If you're making a batch, just multiply everything by four, or eight and so on - it'll keep everything even. If it's too strong, add water, if it's too weak, add more rum! You'll only ever need to cinnamon sticks though - don't go mad with those, they're pretty strong!

  3. The rum was a hit! Couldn't find Creme de Cacao anywhere so improvised with cocoa powder, vanilla and MORE rum. A warming start to what was a rather good night! Thank you!
