Design Porn: Oh My Clumsy Heart

Mostly, when jewellery is described as 'minimal', my gut instinct is to run very fast in the other direction, my gaudy, oversized perspex necklaces rattling comfortingly along the way. I am not a minimal person. I own a necklace made from 40 plastic gumball charms, including a miniature Colgate toothpaste, a roulette wheel, and a frying pan - this is all you need to know. But look what's happened - Oh My Clumsy Heart may have cured me of my aversion to any piece of jewellery that isn't the size of a baby's fist and colourful enough to make a rainbow weep with jealousy.

It began a few months ago, this strange metamorphosis. I started following Oh My Clumsy Heart on Twitter, and found myself visiting designer-maker Sophie's shop every time she posted a photo of one of her creations. I'd nod thoughtfully at her work, muttering to myself about the simplicity of triangles and the beauty of geology. I'm drawn to it like a magnet. I want everything, but especially this Bertha rainbow quartz necklace (most pieces have a human name. This is a massive plus in my book). Bertha is £30 with a gold chain, £25 with a silver one. Come payday, she'll be mine.

When I spotted Frances, this gorgeous hunkette of citrine hanging from a gold chain, I immediately went searching for the rest of the Domestic Sluts Collection. Alas, our Frances is the only one of us to have been made into a necklace so far, but I'm sure the rest of us will get a look-in soon.

Here's one of those simple triangles I was muttering about. Triangles are my favourite shape. This one doesn't have a human name, but I have christened it Gordon.

Circles = also very good in the shape department. Constance comes on a 16- or 18-inch chain, at £23 and £25.

Colours! All of 'em! These tiny (8mm!) epoxy drops are £15 each. I want a yellow one. I quite fancy having a simple-but-colourful everyday necklace that can quietly hold its own against all my roulette wheels and other assorted crap. Also they look so smooth, like a worry stone. So simple, so effective. I'm muttering again.

Cats can be minimal too, it turns out. RELATED: I went to a cat show on Saturday! It was wonderful. Just loads and loads of really swanky cats, preparing themselves for a busy day of being judged on their good looks by falling asleep in their litter boxes. Oh, cats. This one is called Felicity, and she's definitely Best in Show.

Another good thing about Oh My Clumsy Heart: the sale section. Agustina is a lovely brooch-locket, which I'm hoping is named after Agustina de Aragón, the kick-ass woman who defended Spain during the War of Independence and who, in later life, wore her medals with pride as she strolled round her home town of Zaragoza. This is just £7.50, by the way! What a bargain.

Also in the sale - a pony called Penelope! She reminds me of Caleigh's brilliant hidden unicorn cake, and she's a tenner.

It's just all so beautiful. I won't be giving up on my plastic jewellery just yet, but I'm definitely going to buy a couple of Sophie's necklaces. Which would you choose?

  1. I really like the Frances necklace.

You could almost say that it has my name all over it.

    (boom, cha!)

  2. Yes, yes, these are all very lovely, but I need to know more about the gumball charm necklace!

  3. Bertha is my favourite. Did everyone watch Bertha when they were kids? That was such a great show.
