Dream Dress: Polka Dot Polly

This dress is lovely, non? I do like a bit of toile to twee up my day. But wait! Let's whoosh through space and time and examine it in more detail. Or, you know, just look at a close-up photo:

TARDIS TOILE! Yes indeed. The Doctor Who Cecelia dress is one of hundreds of made-to-order vintage replica dresses available at Polka Dot Polly. You can select bust and waist measurements, plus the skirt length, so you know you're going to get a dress that fits brilliantly.

I'll be honest - the Polka Dot Polly website is a bit of a minefield to navigate, partly due to the sheer quantity of lovely things they have for sale. It's worth having a good old rummage, though, because there are so many great dresses, and even more amazing fabrics. Luckily for you, I've compiled a fantasy shopping list.

Sticking with the glamorous geek theme for just a short while longer, here's their Lily dress in Marvel fabric. Let's assume this photo has been accidentally flipped, and that you won't actually have to get everyone to look at you in a mirror. It's £88 right now (there's a sale going on), which is pretty reasonable for a dress that's made specially for you.

More of a Star Wars girl? You might want to snap up this Rosie dress. May the frock be with you.

It's not all comic books and science fiction, though. Unsurprisingly for a shop named Polka Dot Polly, polka dots feature quite heavily. The Amelia dress is a total doll, particularly when she's resplendent in pink and white.

I'm also dotty for the Penny dress. This is all I want to wear this summer.

The shape of this Dorothy dress is making me swoon. The collar's a bit Maleficent, and the whole thing is covered in tiny skulls. Beautifully wicked.

This being Domestic Sluttery, I couldn't let a striped anchor-print dress slip by unnoticed. This is Daisy, and she's £60.80 at the mo.

The made-to-order replicas are fabulous, but perhaps the most fun thing about Polka Dot Polly is the design your own dress service. Choose your bodice style, skirt shape and length, fabric and trimmings, and then sit back and wait for your perfect frock to wing its way to you. I spent a happy half-hour simply searching for increasingly unlikely fabric designs (screeching, at no-one, things like, "PANDAS! I wonder if they have Space Invaders?! I bet there's no Curious George!"). The choice is a little overwhelming, but you're guaranteed to find a fabric - and dress style - that you love. Prices depend on the design and material, and start at around £50.

Anyway, I can't hang around - I've got a Wonder Woman dress to design.

  2. Oh my god!! I must have that TARDIS dress! And the Marvel one, too...and all of them, frankly. Maybe this can be diet incentive...

  3. There's too much choice! I can't choose between Star Trek, Monsters University, Russian dolls or buttons. My head hurts.
