Design Porn: Claire Brewster

I lost a good part of my afternoon staring at Claire Brewster's glorious papercuts so now I'm urging you to do the same.

Claire uses out-of-date maps and atlases to create her artwork, painstakingly cutting to create her detailed paper sculptures.

She's inspired by nature in all of her pieces. Most of which feature birds and insects - subjects that have little care for city borders. She cleverly uses the raised aspect of paper cutting to add a three-dimensional element to her work, casting shadows across whole boroughs of London.

I can't see a bee print without saying 'Bees?' in a funny voice but this piece is actually my favourite. It's a nice break away from the birds and I love how pointy his sting shadow is.

Each piece takes Claire days to complete (and as a result prices can run into the thousands for a special one off), but they're all so special and unusual. I love that you can personalise them to your favourite part of London or your hometown. And your favourite winged thing, of course. I would like wasps across Greenwich.

You can discover more of Claire's work on her blog, or check out her pieces at London's Corinthia Hotel or The Caledonian in Edinburgh - this grouse piece was commissioned for them. You can also buy original pieces from TAG Fine Arts and some reproductions directly from Claire's website. Prices start in the early hundreds, so for now I'm going to have to settle for just staring at my laptop screen in awe while I cut up my old London A-Z.
