Baking Essentials: Cool Chocolate Moulds

Next week, when I've come back from my holiday, I'm going to share a couple of recipes with you for making your own chocolates and sweets. But, if you're going to start making sweeties, you'll need a couple of things to get you started. Firstly, you must must must buy a candy thermometer. Right away. Once you've got that out of the way, why not buy some of these very cool chocolate moulds from Wilton.

These heart-shaped moulds are £3.49. You get 7 cavities so if you want to make a lot, you might need to buy a couple of moulds.

Want to make little tiny presents for your friends? This present mould is perfect. The mould has 15 cavities and it's £6.40.

These rose moulds are £6.40 but you get three different designs.

And these swirl moulds are pretty cool too. You can buy these for £6.40.

  1. This reminds me! Can anyone help with a burning question that I've had since I spotted Hugh F-W's marshmallow recipe in a magazine a couple of weeks back?

I need a sugar thermometer, which needs to be functional, preferably somewhat idiot-proof, and not going to cost an arm and a leg? I have a couple of shops in mind but I don't want to buy something that ends up living in a drawer.

Personal recommendations or pitfalls to avoid would be hugely appreciated. Thank you!

  2. I was just thinking the other day how I wanted to try and make candies this Christmas to include with presents...so I'm looking forward to your posts! I have my grandpa's vintage candy thermometer just sitting at home waiting to be used!

  3. Thanks for your comments ladies!

To be honest most candy thermometers are good, but if you're doing something like toffee and you need to be really precise (yes, there's a bit difference between 100 and 102 degrees) then you might want to invest in a digital one. One with a longer 'wand' is always good too - otherwise you'll burn your knuckles with sugary stuff! A good digital one will probably set you back about £15 - £20.

    Hope that helps!
