Design Porn: Joe Simpson
I've been meaning to tell you about Joe Simpson's work for a while now because every time I see it, I stare at it with a dumbass gormless look on my face. That's not a photograph you're looking at. No, really. It's a painting. Let's stare at some more.
IT LOOKS LIKE A PHOTOGRAPH.
This painting is called The Letting Go, which is just about the most romantic thing ever. Also, IT LOOK LIKE A PHOTOGRAPH.
You can buy Joe's work from Art Finder for £195 and then a limited edition print can be yours to stare it, muttering 'it looks like a photograph, it's some sort of witchcraft', every time you walk by, which is absolutely money well spent.

If it looks like a photograph, where's the value? Just take a photograph. Each picture here wouldn't particularly interesting as a digital snapshot. Just because they're painted well (fantastically well, technically) doesn't make the views suddenly interesting.
ReplyDeleteI imagine if Joe painted scenes more akin to the photographic work of Gregory Crewdson -- scenes with an intensity or eeriness, they'd garner more attention.
Sincerely, anonymous Internet coward.
Hi anonymous internet coward,
Delete"Where's the value?" is an interesting choice of phrase. The value, in any art, if the enjoyment that someone gets from a piece of work. The fact that they're paintings, does add something to each of these scenes. You might not think so personally, but I think there's actually something quite eerie about them, like they're sort of frozen in time. They're more than a still life, there's a cinematography to his work and I think that's pretty special.
um, WOW! This is something I would never tire of marvelling at in my living room. Love them!
