Sluttery Travels: The China Tower, Devon

I get excited when The Landmark Trust get a new property. It's like going to the newsagents and realising that your favourite magazine has come out a day early. It's like realising it's Sunday and you can go back to sleep for a bit. It's like remembering a cup of tea just before it's perfect drinking temperature. We're talking pretty brilliant levels of excitement. But when I see that their new property is a tower, I'm mere seconds away from booking myself a holiday. I do love a tower.

The China Tower in Devon dates back to 1839. It's part of the Rolle Estate and was actually built by Louisa - Lady Rolle herself - for her husband's birthday. That's a very impressive birthday present. The last gift I bought someone was a packet of Monster Munch.

So named because of Lady Roelle's vast china collection, the tower itself is actually rather simple. I wouldn't go as far to say plain - the splashes of colour stop it from being bland - but it's certainly not grand. I think that's why I like it so much.

Spreading itself over four storeys, the water tower is as reasonable as the rest of Landmark's properties. It sleeps 4 - two in a double and two in a twin room - and prices start at £264 for three nights. But, it's been so popular already that if you want to stay you'll have to book quickly and be patient - dates across the summer are gone. Instead, book this as a winter retreat and give yourself something to look forward to. I can see this becoming one of the Trust's most popular properties.

    1. It's lovely, isn't it? Check out the rest of the towers (I've linked to them in the post.) I wish I lived in a tower.
