Serve your tea like Bettys

It wouldn't be Yorkshire week on Domestic Sluttery without at least one mention of Bettys. The first branch opened all the way back in 1919 in Harrogate. Their classic mix of tea and delicious confectioneries is now apparently enjoyed by over one million customers a year. They've got a pretty smashing online shop too.

There's all sort of delicious things you can get delivered (that's your gran's birthday present sorted in one easy click), but it was their range of tea sets that drew me in. Recreate the joy of teatime at Bettys without even leaving your sofa.

Ever tasted a fat rascal? I confess I haven't, but they sound like a delicious citrusy combination of bun and scone. They must be pretty good, as they're Bettys best-selling product. They've also been celebrated in a range from Emma Bridgewater, decorated in her distinctive style. You can make out the almonds and the glacĂ© cherries that decorate each fat rascal. This is the hot chocolate mug which sells for £21.95 but the range also includes a more traditional cup and saucer, bowls, sugar bowl and, of course, a tea pot. (And, if you want to experience a fat rascal, they also sell a box of four for £7.)

Bettys have also commissioned some products from another sluttery favourite, Poppy Treffry. There's a lovely apron or this tea cosy, typical of Poppy's cosy, whimsical charm. This is £45 - think of it in terms of pots of tea saved from growing cold.

Or, if you really want to echo the style of Bettys in your own kitchen, they also sell classic tea room style tableware. Though I do think my home is missing its own silver plated cake stand, at £175, it's sadly out of my price range. More affordable is the classic Royal Doulton set used in Bettys tea rooms. This plate costs £9, meaning more pennies to spend on cake, tea and chocolate. Happy stuff.

  1. I went to Betty's years ago with my ex-boyfriend's mum who proceeded to order a "fat bastard".

Fat rascals are very tasty. I can see why it is a best seller.

  2. If you are in Harrogate then you must visit the Turkish Baths and Spa, they are owned by the council so really good value but a real treat! I went on my honeymoon and enjoyed a Fat Rascal in Betty's afterwards!
