Wallpaper Wednesday: Marimekko Cows

UPDATE We've been reliably informed that these aren't Jersey cows! They're actually Finnish cows, which the designer Miina Äkkijyrkkä.is a huge fan of. What brilliant cattle knowledge our readers have.

Cows on a bright pink background. That sounds ridiculous, doesn't it? But in the creative, capable hands of Marimekko, these cows look very splendid indeed. Sure, they are still a little ridiculous, but in the best way possible.

Look at their little faces! They're adorable. I'm thinking this is a wallpaper perfect for the kitchen or dining room. And yeah, probably a downstairs loo, but I don't actually know anyone how has one of those. London is all full of flats, we don't really have a downstairs anything.

I don't think I like the green design very much (but then I never was a fan of lime green) and I'm not sure I'd put this design in my living room. But I do love it. The little cow faces are mega cute, and the bold background stops it from being too childish. Instead it's bold, striking and very cool indeed.

Like it? It's £72.21 a roll from Wallpaper Direct.

  1. I have never loved a wallpaper more. I may have to more seriously consider buying a flat just to have this in my life. Extreme? Possibly. Justified? almost certainly.

    1. It shouldn't work, but it absolutely does. It works so hard. Which colour would you go for, Lindsay?

  3. I love your blog and have been following it for a while now.

First time commenting: they're not Jerseys but "kyyttö" which is an Eastern Finnish traditional breed endemic to Finland :)

    1. Not that I want to question your cow knowledge, but they are called Jersey Cows on Wallpaper Direct... http://www.wallpaperdirect.co.uk/brands/marimekko

How can we tell one cow from another? Can you show me an example of a Finnish cow, just so I can compare?

      This conversation is fun :-)

  4. Ah, lost in translation!

    https://www.google.fi/search?hl=fi&safe=off&client=firefox-a&hs=xQ5&rls=org.mozilla:fi:official&q=finncattle&bav=on.2,or.r_cp.r_qf.&bvm=bv.43828540,d.bGE&biw=1276&bih=632&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=ZKFHUbuZA-zQ4QTZjoFg

I'd say Jerseys are cuter on face to face level, so I'm willing to let the translator off with this blunder. The designer of these cows is just really famous in Finland for her love of Finncattle (and her crazy antics)

    1. Oh gosh, look at that! You're right. What excellent Finnish cow/wallpaper knowledge.

Thanks for coming back and updating, I've edited the post to reflect the correct cows. Are you Finnish, Kasja? How did you stumble upon Domestic Sluttery? I'm very pleased you did!

    2. Haha, great. Yes, Finnish and also studying veterinary medicine. Explains being so particular about cattle, right?

I don't honestly remember how I stumbled upon this blog, but it's been a while now. Thank you for keeping up the good work and giving me "something better to do" during lectures!
