Design Porn: Sylvain Le Guen

The Fan Museum in Greenwich is a tiny little place, and honestly the last place that I expected to discover an unusual fashion exhibition. Sylvain Le Guen is a fan designer. Thinking it's all paper fans like the ones that you get on holiday in Spain? Take a look.

The detail in these is so intricate. Part of the exhibition includes a video of Le Guen working and while the construction of the base isn't complicated, it's a very time-consuming process.

This shell and lace fan is my favourite. Imagine taking this somewhere and fluttering it about. The materials used are beautiful - everything from silk to feathers can be manipulated.

I love that Le Guen plays with paper - not entirely practical, but it's interesting to see how unusual fans can be. We're used to seeing the same shape over and over again and Le Guen challenges that.

Especially with this one - it's scented! Flutter it in the usual way and a glorious scent surrounds you. The fan is leather and the design is the local of French perfumier Maison Francis Kurkdjian. Very nice it smelled too. (Incidentally, Francis has lovely website music and that's a rare thing indeed.)

This is a real showstopper (and custom made too). It's designed to look just like a leather corset with metal spikes instead of boning. It's such a spectacular piece. And if you opened it too quickly, it would be probably do some damage. I wouldn't mess with the woman carrying this at a party. But I would want to be the woman carrying this.

Pretty special, aren't they?

The Sylvain le Guen exhibition is running at the Fan Museum in Greenwich until November 13. You'll find the Fan Museum on Crooms Hill (nearest station, Greenwich overground) and the modest £4 entrance fee gets you into the rest of the museum as well.
