Ask The Sluts: What's our favourite ice cream?

This summer is being batshit crazy. It's utterly rubbish and 'muggy' is a hateful word that we're sick of hearing. On the plus side, it's warm enough for ice cream. It doesn't need to be sunny for ice cream. We eat a lot of ice cream at Sluttery HQ. We've even told you how to make ice cream and we're very excited about gin sorbet. But what are our favourite iced treats when we hear the ice cream van jingle?

Siany: I really, really like cheap strawberry ice cream. None of the stuff with real strawberries in it, I like the crap stuff. But if I'm in a corner shop I'll opt for a Feast every single time. Hands down the best ice cream on a stick in the whole world.

Sara: Strawberry split, bought from an ice-cream van in the park on a hot summer's day. Perfect combination of ice-cream and ice lolly.

Hazel: Oooh it's a tough one between mint choc chip or rum and raisin. I still really miss Ice Magic, remember those triangle bottles of flavoured chocolate sauce that you had to stand in a mug of hot water before pouring all over your ice cream? It would set solid. I liked the mint one, basically any ice cream was amazing if covered in that!

Elizabeth: My absolute favourite ice cream is Haagan Dazs Belgian Chocolate. It's pretty much been a mainstay in my life since I was 9 years old. My Daddio would take us to the Haagan Dazs shop in Watford on the weekend's and we would sit slurping our thick delicious ice creams in the newly built Harlequin centre. It was only treat back in those days, and it ws the best treat ever!

Caleigh: If I could have any ice cream, it would be the homemade vanilla one from the Hillfoot Cafe in Bearsden. When I can't justify an 800 mile round-trip for ice cream, I go for Mackie's Honeycomb; it's basically just puff candy crushed into ice cream. What could be better?

Alex E: I'm a sucker for Kelly's Clotted Cream. It's like ordinary ice cream, but creamier and it goes with everything. That's my excuse for always having a tub of it in the freezer. If I'm out and about, I go for a scoop of Oreo flecked gelato from Black Vanilla in Blackheath.

Sel: Are we in Italy? Are you buying me a pistachio ice cream? Then I love you. There is no ice cream love that can compare to some good pistachio ice cream. Unless you're waving a tub of Ben and Jerry's Phish Food at me with just one spoon that's got my name on it.

Laura: Anything gelato-esque is absolute heaven for me (especially if it tastes of lemon), but pretty much since birth whenever I hear that ice cream van jingle I never fail to crave a Twister. It is the key to my heart.

What's your favourite ice cream?

  2. There's just not nearly enough mentions of Feasts in this list. THEY'RE CLEARLY THE BEST ONES.

  3. My mum makes Tia Maria ice-cream. Unbeatable. I have the secret recipe, too. She makes it better though, naturally.

  4. Completely agree with everything Siany said. Cheap strawberry ice cream is amazing, weirdly the cheaper the better! I also like those little cheap pots of raspberry ripple the ones I used to have in school and a mint Feast is what I get from an ice cream van or when I'm out and about!

  6. Joe's icecream in Swansea (an Italian diaspora firm - so it's real Italian icecream with a Welsh twist, making it ace) - they primarily serve vanilla icecream (with chocolate sprinkles or nuts. Or both) - you can get sundaes with strawberry or chocolate, or order home tubs of them, but nothing compares to this:

When I am sadly not in reach of Welsh frozen dairy product wonders, I very much enjoy a trip to Oxford's own icecream parlour chain G&Ds (very much about the flavours - you can even request them to make something if you get enough signatures, which is how "Ambassador's choice" Ferrero Rocher flavoured icecream was born) which is open til midngiht for all your drunken icecream needs.

From a regular freezer or van, I like an old fashioned 99 with flake and red sauce, a Feat or a Twister. Yummy!

Now, where did I put my spoon....?

  8. They still make bottles of chocolate sauce that sets solid; it's called "crackin' sauce" and you can get it in Asda!!! <3
