Sluttery Travels: Dent Station, Carlisle

Trains are my happy place. Even the commuter train with the Angry Office Lady rolling her eyes at everyone. I even like the delayed train that means I get ten more minutes to read my book chapter while everyone else is tutting. I also like pretend playing 'kind commuter' and making it look like I'm letting people off the train when really, I'm blocking everyone else from taking their seat and my kindness makes the seat rightfully mine.

Train hotels also make me happy.

Dent Station is actually the highest mainland station in England. It's 1150 metres above sea level and is someway between Carlisle and Leeds. It's in private ownership and is now a gorgeous holiday home, but the train station is still in use so you can hop on and off right where you're staying.

The station is actually huge. There are three bedrooms accommodating six people.

Oh look, a steam train whizzing by your house. (Random man with camera not included.)

If you don't want to stay in the main building, you can stay in the Snow Hut. Built in 1885, it was a shelter for railway workers clearing the trains and tracks of snow.

Want to stay here? The house is between £800 and £1000 for a week so it's about £130 per person (twenty quid a night, bargain). But it's very popular, and it's almost fully booked for the entire year. Fear not! You're in luck if you fancy a spontaneous break, though. They've got some space this month if you're quick. Go, go be quick.
